I'm pretty sure that's a good deal more in years and dollars than they've offered up to this point.

Unless the comment was made because this actually happened a couple of days ago and has already been discussed.

That was the reported offer they made this spring that he turned down. It got talked about earlier this week or late last week. Don't remember who reported it but I remember it being somebody reputable.

Rotoworld is reporting the Cardinals offered Pujols a 9/195 deal.

Is that supposed to be an improvement over what they offered him before the season?

i guess they figure he might be more inclined to take it with his numbers dipping this year

Now what if they did decide to re-up both Ramirez and Pena? Granted, Fielders still my choice by a long shot, but if we re sign those 2, and then sign Jose Reyes, assuming he'd make the switch to 2B, would

Jackson

Castro

Ramirez

Pena

Reyes

Byrd

Soriano

Soto

Really be the worst lineup? Again, I'd really prefer Fielder, or Pujols, who I still see as a pipe dream, but if we went this route, we then go after Kemp or Ethier to replace Byrd the next year. However, theres always the chance that Reyes would want similar money to Fielder or Pujols, in which case it doesn't make sense to sign him over Fielder. Again, this isn't my ideal scenario, but if that's the route that the Cubs choose to go, it could be worse. Whatever happens, they need to go out and get at least 1 more productive bat for the lineup.

As exciting as Reyes is if I put my eggs in the basket of a non-1B superstar I think I'd go CC.

I also would move Castro rather than Reyes to 2B, which is part if why I'd pursue CC instead.

If course I think if Ricketts wanted he could afford both Reyes and CC. Pujols turned down 200 million, and I'm guessing he's looking for close to ARod money. If that's true then Reyes for 125 and CC 180 might not seem as crazy as typing this out makes me feel it is.

Heres a name that hasn't come up at all in talks, and for good reasons: Justin Morneau. He's had an awful season, mostly due to the concussion he suffered last year, but he's going to be a FA in 2014, and the Twins don't look like they'll be going anywhere anytime soon, although they always seem to resurge, but I wonder if they'd be willing to move him and how much it would cost. Very doubtful, but still.

I can't wait to take a flyer on the worst hitting 1B in baseball in his age 31 season two years removed from severe concussion problems. Sign me up.

Reyes scares the crap out of me for a number of reasons, not least of which are his crazy BABIP, injury history, and the fact that his greatest assets (speed and ability to play SS) are likely to decline both with age and his continuing hamstring issues.

i see this repeated frequently, but it doesn't hold up under a more critical eye.

On the plus side, Tom Tango’s research has revealed that players who derive a high percentage of their value from speed tend to age more gracefully than the population of players as a whole. Tango discovered that a speedy player like Reyes in the age-29-31 bracket can expect to lose more than four wins less over the life of a seven-year contract than a player who’s less fleet of foot. It’s not clear if this is because speed itself is more resistant to the effects of age or because speedy players tend to be more athletic, better-conditioned, and more capable of compensating in other areas as their physical gifts diminish, but regardless of the reason, speed works in Reyes’ favor when it comes to long-term deals.

Prince Fielder pretty much says that he's not going to resign with Milwaukee.

“I'm signed for this year, but being real about it, it is probably the last year.”

“It's been great, unfortunately, this is probably the last year of the one-two punch [of Fielder and Braun],” Fielder said. “But I think it's been good, five years, him and me. Hopefully, we can go out with a blast.

I wonder if any of the other guys ever take offense to those 2 refering to themselves as the 1-2 punch. True as it may be, it's kind of like when Jordan used to refer to his supporting cast.

The other guys won't care if Fielder and Braun can get them a big bonus check from the World Series.

Not a surprise, but it's interesting that he's talking about it publicly while the season is still going on.

A two-year, $22MM deal would likely stretch the Giants' budget, Baggarly writes. The asking price for the 34-year-old Beltran figures to be even higher. Outgoing CEO Bill Neukom suggested yesterday that Boras will start the bidding for Beltran at five or six years, according to John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Wait, what? If he wants 5-6 years for his oft injured 35 year old, I wonder what he wants for a 28 year old in the prime of his career who happens to be one of the best hitters in the game.

I'm not saying he won't try to get Fielder a longer contract but... Beltran is likely trying to get his last contract, 5-6 years would do that. He probably doesn't want to try to do two or three 1-2 year contracts. Fielder could get a huge 5 year deal, then another huge 5 year deal after that. Just because Fielder is way younger doesn't necessarily mean he'll want a longer deal. He'd probably be more likely to want a little more money in exchange for years knowing he still has a chance at another deal later.
