I liked Cashman's comments, he can give $15million a year to .270/.340/.370 but he is worried about giving closer money to Wood who had an era of .69 and WHIP of 1.23 as the setup man.

They're not comparable situations at all, and if they were, signing one stupid contract doesn't mean you have to sign nothing but stupid contracts. (Unless you're Jim Bowden)

Former Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood was at Ryan Dempster's charity event Friday and talked with us about going through free agency:

"There has been a lot of interest, but at this stage of my career it has to be the right fit for my family. We are raising our kids and making our permanent home in Chicago, so we'll see what happens."

On coming back to the Cubs: "Nothing is impossible. We'll see how things play out."

There have also been several rumors about Wood possibly playing for the White Sox but that appears to be off the table. When asked about signing with the Sox, Wood smiled and said we've talked about that before. Wood has told us several times over the years that he could never see himself putting on a White Sox uniform.

If Wood is willing to take a paycut to come home, then kill the fatted calf and prepare a feast.

A) I irrationally love Kerry Wood

B) This would likely force Cashner out of the 'pen.

That said, the money would have to be right.

I'm all for it. I'd love to see him retire as a cub. Sounds to me he really wants to come home. Get it done Hendry.

What about the fact that Kerry Wood isn't very good at pitching anymore?

I don't care, he is #1 in my heart.

Same here. I want him to retire a Cub.

I thought he did that in the middle of 2008.

Don't be a buzz kill. Share the love.

Outside of the fact that he was pretty good late last year, you are right. 0.69 ERA in the second half. I think he has 1 or 2 more good years left.

Bringing Wood back would be a horrible decision.

NOT IF YOU DO IT RIGHT

for example: one year, $500,000 contract and he agrees to secretly give all the money back to the cubs every time he receives a paycheck so he costs nothing

i would consider this a low-risk move.

Because he's Kerry Wood. He's our Derek Jeter, only he's not a complete enigmatic black hole we have to play if he's a 7th or 8th inning guy. And most importantly, there's room for upside. It wouldn't be a terrible baseball move so long as he doesn't cost a ton. If we're not going anywhere next year, then bring him back. I'd rather lose with him than without him. If I knew keeping him off the team would help us make the playoffs, then fine. I don't think we'll be in a position to make the post season so I want to sleep better at night and have dreams of Kerry Wood leading the Cubs.

I know hes is not what he once was but I still think he could help the team win. If he came here he knows he wont be the closer and Marshall is probably going to be in the bullpen again as the setup guy, and I think if he would be willing to accept a lesser role he would be better than everybody else we have in the bullpen already (unless guzman picks up where he left off) and I would rather see him pitching before calling up samardzjia (sp?) or someone else that is going to be called up then sent down and repeat. I'm a little more optimistic about next year than most, but if we are out of it by mid season I say stretch him out and let him start again, for strictly nostalgic reasons.
