There was very clearly 1 second left and maybe 2 when flags were flying and whistles were blown. That the "winning" team started celebrating a premature victory when there were clearly flags flying all over the place at 0:00 should not have changed that there was still time on the clock. Can't blame Tennessee for the premature victory celebration as they thought they won the game, but the officials did need to put the time back on the clock and enforce a penalty and finish the game.

If an official announced that the game was over, he needs his head examined. There was a parade of yellow flags flying.

how would you feel if you were a NC fan and the refs were like "oh yeah, sorry we blew that call, but already promised tennessee the game was over and they're really excited, so sorry." give me a break.

There's a simple answer to that – don't make a call that doesn't need to be made. What was the good in the ref coming out and announcing the game is over when there was still doubt?

Just a play or two before the field goal attempt, the NC running back got tackled and then a guy who had already given himself up on the play landed on the runner. I didn't have a problem with that guy, it was the guy who put a shoulder down and hit the runner again after that when he had already been down for quite some time and the play had been blown dead. If they call that 15 yarder, it's a chip shot field goal to tie the game.

You're right that there should probably be a run off or a 15 yarder in most cases where a team is deliberately trying to stop the clock to get the field goal unit on the field. In this case, I can't feel sorry for Tennessee. And they clearly gave it away in overtime, so props to NC.

Actually, if they show the play again the Tennessee guy was actually pushed into the guy who was on the ground by the NC guy. It really could have been a personal foul on North Carolina.

none. so what.

unc should be penalized and robbed of a second because the ref got your hopes all up when he pinky swore the game was over?

and what harm was there in saying the game was over and then saying, no we have to review it?

I didn't see that. I just saw the guy with his shoulder down and bearing into the defenseless runner. If that's the case, good non call.

You may be right. Like I said, I couldn't watch the game, but the radio guys didn't indicate late hits on that drive.

We definitely gave that game away, there's no doubt about that. What bothers me is refs making needless incorrect calls when the better move is to make no call until you know what's going on. Whether you believe in momentum, emotion, etc, impacting games or not, there was still no reason to make that call at that time and if it had any impact, it was a negative one.

The Tennessee players were celebrating because the head referee announced the game was over. Then he waited a while and then came back and decided it wasn't over after all. From all indications it was correct to put a second back on the clock, but the ref announcing the game was over was needless and if it had an impact (which I think it clearly did) it was a negative one.

He said that the penalty (there was only 1 for too many men on the field) was on the offense, meaning that their wouldn't be a after clock play as if it were a penalty on the defense.

The pass play before where the Tenn. player fell onto the NC player after the player was down was called correctly. The Tenn. player was shoved, but not hard and still in a way that could be seen as part of the play, causing him to fall onto the NC player. It was incidental.

Where did I say that? I'm annoyed because they made the wrong call (announcing the game was over) when they didn't need to call anything at all until they determined there would be a replay. I've already said it was correct to put a second back on the clock, but don't announce the game's over when it's not.

The ref announced the game was over and the players began to celebrate. They relaxed and then all of a sudden, because of the erroneous call, they had to refocus. Emotion took over from that point on and North Carolina had every bit of the momentum.

Even if you disagree with that, it's poor reffing to make a bad call when no call needs to be made.

You may be right about what the official did, but Tennessee started celebrating as soon as the clock hit zero just like every other team that is winning does when the clock hits zero. Probably in all of the hoopla of Tennessee acting like they won and the referee not realizing that time needed to be put back on the clock, he made the mistake of announcing the game was over. Immature on his part, but probably not the worst mistake an official can make. A worse one would be sticking to his guns and not putting time back on the clock.

He didn't need to make any announcement there, though. Maybe he did just get caught up in the hoopla, but it still had a negative impact on the game.

Yes, the Big 10 crew blew this one. If you watch the replay of the spike, not only did UNC sub in one OL for the snap, but the HOLDER AND KICKER ARE BOTH IN PLACE. Per the rules, the defensive team is allowed to also substitute players under that condition (while the referee stands over the ball, clock running.) If I knew how to post video, I'd post it.

Granted, this was a glorofied scrimmage, but it was an utter clusterhump there at the end.

Dooley pointed this out after the game, but I hadn't seen it.

Also, 12 players participated in the play (while 5 more made a dash for the sideline)... should have been a 15 yarder.

11+ people didn't participate in the play. that's a different penalty than too many men on the field.

12 were in on the play, including the holder and kicker.

Isn't that situation subject to review? You have the clock running down, you have guys all over the field for NC, then you have Tennessee guys running all over the field assuming the game is over. The mistake is probably in not taking a deep breath and going to the replay booth and getting the call right.

Piss poor showing by Nebraska tonight. Only saving grace is that 98% of the people in my pool picked them, so this loss doesn't hurt me. The few people that picked Washington already have at least as many losses as me. I did enjoy the Syracuse and Carolina wins, though.

They did review the spike play and determined there were 12 men on the field when UNC ran the play.
