That's why he's just blah. Super Bowl teams have fantastic coaches. I want a fantastic coach.

Do you consider Ken Whisenhunt, Bill Callahan, Tom Coughlin, Andy Reid, Mike Martz and Lovie Smith to be fantastic coaches, then?

I won't argue the Lovie is upper eschelon in coaches. But I will argue that he deserves his due share of credit for a turnaround season, especially since it was done in the face of absolutely withering criticism from every quarter of Chicagoland and beyond.

There were few who expected this from him. He has my congratulations for the success of 2010 so far. Still work to be done, but so far -- nicely done.

That's all I'm saying.

Yeah.

What's up with the Colts? They look very pedestrian right now.

Everyone's hurt.

So are we, yet we haven't been making any excuses.

They still have Manning. In the past, that's been enough.

In the past they haven't had a starting RB, starting WR, and starting TE all injured at the same time.

They have (or at least very close to that). The problem is that the offensive line has never been this bad. Manning only has around 2 seconds to throw if that. The injuries have exacerbated that problem because Addai is a fantastic blocker, Clark was a better blocker than Tamme, and Collie stretches the field. They aren't even running the same plays anymore because they don't have the talent to run their normal plays.

Last year the Colts were a very, very good team that won every single close game they played. This year they're not quite as good and they've struggled in close games. The difference between the Super Bowl team and this one is really not that large though.

i don't see ANYTHING special about jeff fisher.

I can't think of one thing that Lovie does better than the average coach either.

How about this year where everybody was saying the Bears were going to be lucky to win 5 or 6 games, yet they're 8-3 through the 11 game mark?

Who is everybody? Anybody with half a brain and two ounces of football smarts saw a bears team that cod win 8-9. Only the dumbest pieces of flesh saw 6 wins as a max.

my only problem with lovie is that most of the time, he's gutless in 4th and short situations in enemy territory.

And he's a poor talent evaluator, takes too long to adjust when his personnel stinks (Tommie Harris), bad at challenges, forced out good coaches (Rivera) and so on and so on.

Another pick-6 for Peyton.

Should have been a PI.

I haven't exactly been ill informed of Green Bay's injury situation by the Packers fans that post here :-"

lovie is a pretty good evaluator of talent as it relates to his scheme. and this perserveration on challenges is desperately bizarre.

Mark Anderson and Tommie Harris were both terrible and Lovie refused to take them out of the lineup until it was obvious to everyone that they couldn't play anymore. Manning was his personal project and not until this year has he showed anything. But he really hurt the team last year.

manning had a decent year last year, actually, and he led the league in KR average. but, the other guys that he put in a position to succeed are totally lost on you, aren't they?

lovie gave idonije a shot over a failed angelo draft pick in michael haynes, too. but you haven't mentioned him. all coaches give high-priced players or valued draft picks a shot to prove their potential, it would dumb not to. urlacher didn't exactly light the world on fire in his first few games with the bears, but jauron let him play and continued to search for a place for him rather than simply release him after a few games because it would be moronic. but i doubt that's something that you could understand fully.

you're making me hope lovie keeps his job for 20 more years.

The first teams have been mathematically eliminated this week, as Carolina, Detroit, Buffalo and Cincinnati are out of the playoff race.

The Finnegan-Johnson fight looked like something from the NHL where two guys are jawing at each other before the puck drops and then just drop their gloves and go at it.

5-6 is good enough for first place in the NFC West right now.

BTW, still LOL'ing at Roy freaking Williams.

What a clown. Here's hoping your entire NFL career is summed up in that one, beautiful, bone-headed moment.

The Mark Anderson love is a little weird. He had an amazing rookie year and looked like a legit pass rusher. I found it odd that he demoted Alex Brown for some reason despite Alex doing a good job as the starter. After Anderson proved he is not starter quality, Brown was moved back in there. Eventually Brown was released when we signed Peppers, a move I still hate, but the justification was that Anderson had somewhat of a bounceback year the year before (albeit nowhere close to the year he had in 2006) and probably figured with Peppers taking the pressure off of things (like Tommie did in his rookie year), he would be able to play off of him and get a bunch of sacks. Didn't happen, so he was outright released.

As for Tommie, I don't blame Lovie for trotting him out there as long as he did. In 2005 until his injury in 2006, Tommie Harris looked like one of the premier DT's in football and was quickly becoming if not the best, top 3. Then the injury occured and Tommie looked a bit slow for the next year or two as he battled more injuries. Lovie, knowing what kind of talent Tommie could be when healthy had to wait until he injuries finally went away, trying to do things like suspend him to motivate him. Again, all because everyone knew that Tommie's ceiling is higher than any alternative DT has. So there was definitely justification fro both calls although I do agree he stuck with them both slightly too long.

oh my god

At least he's getting paid. If he's feeling like that, I can only imagine how Brotzman's feeling like.
