If that was obvious to you, then the timing isn't very curious at all is it?

It's obvious now that the Cubs have hired Quade that either all the chatter about Girardi being the top choice was wrong or that he was the top choice but made it clear to the Cubs that he wasn't interested. Got it now?

But why was the timing curious? It's been reported it could happen soon. Quade has made a ton of sense from the beginning and a lot of people more or less assumed he was getting the job. What was it about the timing that makes you think it's curious? It would be curious timing to name Joe Girardi manager right now. It's not curious to name Mike Quade manager right now.

You must be from Oklahoma, so I will type slowly. There were a lot of indications in the media that Girardi was the top choice and that the Cubs wanted to wait to talk to him before going with Quade. Since the Yankees are still playing, it was curious timing to seemingly give up on Girardi before even having the chance to talk to him.

Even if that WAS the case though, Girardi could have very easily let it be known through various channels of communication that he didn't have an interest in the Cubs job at this time. In the end, the Cubs picked their manager right about the time that they said they were wanting to do so. In my opinion, it would have been curious timing if they had WAITED until after the Yanks were done playing and THEN named Quade manager at that point.

I really don't see anything curious about the timing, other than the 4pm (3 central) press conference.

For those who didn't watch the last 37 games of this dreadful season, how is Quade as a manager in terms of decisions? His record is good, at 24-13, sure, but did he get lucky or did he manage really well?

A potential positive from this hiring is that we probably saved quite a bit of money in going from Lou making over 3 mill a year to Quade. I went on Cots to look at what some manager's salaries were, and I didn't find a lot of info, but John Russell makes around 800,000 to manage the Pirates and Joe Maddon started out making 550,000 to manage the Rays. Bud Black also supposedly started out making 900,000 or less to manage the Pads. Gardenhire only makes 1.25 or so to manage the Twins as well. Granted, these are all small market teams, but I doubt Quade would be making much more than a mill a year based on these numbers anyway. If that means more money for the rest of baseball operations(minor league system) an extra 2 mill a year could go pretty far, in that respect.

Neat.

Don't overwork the starting pitchers, and don't do dumb things with who plays in the field most/every day. That's all I want.

You know, I was as big of a Ryno homer growing up as there was. And I'm finding myself relieved that he isn't the new manager. It'll be nice not having to come to hate my hero with a passion in a couple of years.

Wrigley would have gotten a kick out of Ryno getting tossed. The first few times. The tenth time when we're ten games under .500 at the break, not so much.

If he's really passionate about being a long term MLB manager then the best place to start is someplace else. Take one of the lower profile jobs available, prove that you can manage without getting tossed every other game and bunting all the time, and then we'll talk.

Looking back over the game logs in the month of Sept while Quade was manager has me a bit concerned about him overworking starting pitchers. I only looked over Zambrano and Dempsters and for a team that was 20 games out of contention, they each had more than 2 starts in Sept/Oct over 115 pitches, with them both going over 120. Demp went over 120 two or 3 times in Sept/Oct. There really is no call for that when we were so far out of it.

Demp threw 124 pitches the last game of the year.....

It's a press conference, take it easy.

And its still a meaningless phrase. Saying "he knows how to be a Cub" was criteria they looked for in the next manager is ignorant.

I hear ya. I don't want to hear that BS too. But it's a press conference, it's bound to be full of cliches and stupid comments. I doubt Quade went into the interview with JH and said things like "I'm the best choice because I know how to be a Cub".

Actually now that I think about it, I bet you that crap was discussed.

But it nags at me because one possible reason a person makes ignorant comments is because he's actually ignorant.

Which is fine if it's a fan. Fine if it's any one of us. Not so fine if it's our owner.

What do you think the record is for most managers hired by a single, non-WS winning General Manager?

JH is at 3 now.

Doug Melvin's going on at least 4.

MacPhail has a nice little streak going outside of the Twins way back when.

Just looked it up, he's actually only hiring his 3rd this offseason. He was hiring in October 2002, he hired Yost for 2003, then Yost was famously fired in September 2008 and replaced by Dale Sveum. But he was only an interim manager, and to me that doesn't count because it doesn't go against his GM track record. Then after that season he fired Ken Macha for the last 2 years and now will be hiring his 3rd. But Hendry beat him to the punch.

I looked up Dombrowski, Jocketty, Colletti, Sabean and none of them have made 3 managerial hires at their current (or St. Louis for Jocketty) position.

I was including Jerry Narron from his Texas days. Wasn't sure if he hired Oates.

Ahhh I just meant in the same tenue with the same team. Usually they say a GM gets his one manager hire, sometimes two. Rarely 3, as evidenced by Hendry and soon Melvin being the only 2 active GMs that have had the opportunity to make 3 managing hires. Usually they are fired or move on by now.
