The Colts are not having a good bye week. Austin Collie has had surgery on his hand and will miss several weeks at least. Addai is still uncertain on when he'll be able to lift his left arm again and could miss a few weeks depending on how it heals. Antonio Johnson also underwent knee surgery and his return is uncertain.

Dallas Clark too

I'm watching footage from the DVD the NFL sent out to the teams on ESPN. One of the VPs is doing the voice over explaining what kind of hits they like and don't like. I still can't understand what they wanted Robinson of the Falcons to do differently. He hit Jackson's chest with his own shoulder. That looked like a textbook hit. Where else did he want Robinson to hit him? In the waist? It really wasn't possible for him to get hit anywhere else.

What's the likelihood on Clark being out for the year?

My take on the hits discussion.

I don't understand what all the fuss is about. All the hits in question this week, IMO, were and always have been illegal. You never could intentionally hit a player in the head, you never could lead with your helmet, and you never could launch yourself at an opposing defenseless player. Harrison, Merriweather, and Robinson each did at least 1 of these illegal things.

The mess about flag football league, changing the way guys play is BS. Nobody is changing anything except the punishment for these hits.

Not that I'm siding with the league, though, as I think this was a clear overreation on their part. Hits like the ones we saw last week, happen every week. The NFL can't all of a sudden decide the hits are too violent, especially when they aren't doing all they can for player safety in the first place.

I'd say pretty good. He's displaced a ligament in his hand and it's supposedly a pretty rare injury. They haven't even figured out how to treat it yet or if it will require surgery. Polian was asked about the length of the injury:

Clark, Polian added, "will be out for a while, if not longer."

Since the Colts are famous on saying people are day to day no matter how severe the injury, I see that as a very bad sign. I'd be almost certain about it except that Clark has been a very fast healer one time before when they were going to IR him and then suddenly he was back for the playoffs.

Man, that's tough for the Colts. Definitely helps the Titans (and the Texans), but hurts one of my fantasy teams. Do the Colts still have Tamme at TE?

Apparently the "punter" hit that's being referenced in the drawing above was the Earl Bennett block of Jon Ryan in the Bears game...it was one of the "good hits" in the video.

Yes, they do. Tamme, Eldridge, and Gijon Robinson will try to fill the spot. Tamme is easily the best pure receiver of the 3 but he's also the worst blocker. I'd guess the Colts will try to get Tamme involved since they'll need the receiving threat (with Collie out, Gonzalez questionable, and both White and Garcon both currently playing with injuries it doesn't leave many receivers).

Somebody's getting fined, I'd guess. Doesn't mean they're wrong, though.

They are wrong. It's a pretty easy rule to follow. The launching and the initial contact being made with the helmet and/or to the opponents helmet are really easy to not do.

ProFootballTalk.com reports: The NFL distributed a training video to all teams showing nine hits, six of which were illegal and three that were OK. One of the permissible hits shown on the video -- which was required viewing for all players -- was the Bears' Earl Bennett blasting Seahawks punter Jon Ryan last Sunday during Devin Hester's punt-return touchdown.

"Now take a look at some positive plays," NFL executive vice-president of football operations Ray Anderson says while Bennett's hit is being shown (click here to view the NFL video). "These plays show hard, effective hits can be delivered within the rules. A punter pursuing on a kick play is a defenseless player under the rule. The Chicago player avoids an illegal hit by going shoulder-to-chest, yet delivers a solid blow that takes the punter out of the play. Nice adjustment made here to play within the rules and avoid blowing an opponent up."

The video also shows a hit by Ray Lewis where he was in the exact same situation as Harrison on Massaquoi, and similar to Robinson on Jackson. Lewis hit the receiver in the chest, with his shoulder. Lewis still made a highlight reel hit and defensive motivating play. Dustin Keller still did not catch the ball. Keller was still hurt, but was able to play the next week.

His feet also never left the ground, ie. did not launch himself.

the difference in the bennet hit on the punter is so crystal clear that it's stupid what that idiot drew up. He's got defenders launched in the air with their head first going toward the opponents head. Bennett was on his feet and put his shoulder into the chest. It's really freaking simple, but leave it to these simpletons to not understand.

Well that's not an overreaction or anything.

Anyways, just read that Favre is 8-0 in his career against Dom Capers defenses.

And what is the overreaction you are implying? It was a stupid point to attempt to make that reflects the stupidity of whoever made it.

Nope, no overreaction at all.

It was a drawing by a punter (presumably) intending to be humorous and make fun of themselves as much as complain about the rule. Other sites picked up on it and it's a little mini-story that isn't that serious.

I don't even disagree with you. The hyperbole and over the top responses are just odd.

The Packers will still win, just thought I'd point that out. Cook is still iffy so Jennings should be running wide open all day.
