East and West would have been best. I can't think of anything else that doesn't sound dumb. I've heard suggestions for "Lakes" and "Plains" and the like, but that really isn't much better.

Teddy Greenstein is apparently pushing stars and stripes, which is probably more dumb.

The non geography thing is just so dumb. The teams pretty clearly break into a southeast and northwest breakdown.

Or just West-East with Lake Michigan as the dividing line. The stupid Michigan-OSU obsession messed everything up.

Sure, if they didn't already break them up stupidly. But they did. And as things stand now the two divisions mostly fit into a SE/NW breakdown.

"But to get a 90 percent non-approval rating was really surprising. It showed that we didn’t connect with our fans in a way that we wanted to. It’s humbling, to say the least, because we’re trying to build fan bases, not push them away.

"I've been around this business a long time, and I would say it’s one of the more surprising things. There’s a sensibility there that we did not connect with, did not read well."

How are they surprised by the negative response? I figured they knew it was terrible but did it anyway for some specific reason.

This is what caught my eye:

"Delany said the conference chose the divisions based on parity, rather than geography...."

That doesn't make sense. How can you guarantee parity long-term?

There's a joke about Big 10 football officiating in there somewhere.

the names should alternate. the division of the team that wins the conference championship should be the "dogg-dre" division, the loser's should be the "bitch named sadie" division.

They should name the divisions "Boats" and "Hoes"

'Great Plains' and 'Great Lakes' would have been adequate division names, heck the ACC has completely arbitrary division too and they make it work

That might be a good idea if it weren't for the fact that Nebraska is the only state in the Great Plains, and Iowa and Nebraska are the only schools in states that don't border a Great Lake.

That is terrible.

He was joking? I think?

If so you could put schools like NW and Indiana in the students division, and then the schools that care passionately about football and probably pay for the majority of their players in the other. But I don't see a 10 team division and a 2 team division being pretty fair.

The ACC's Divisions are Coastal and Atlantic. Pinpoint accuracy isn't really the goal here.

All of the ACC schools are in states on the Atlantic coast. That's pretty accurate.

Northwestern would be guaranteed a berth in the Big 10 championship game every year but I'm not sure it's that fair to have a 10-team division on the other side.

Someone already made that exact same joke-fail

To be fair, he almost certainly has me on ignore :)

Wouldn't Indiana have to go in a 3rd division marked None of the Above?

Totally. Off the top of my head, it would be inferior academically to UM, UW and UI at the very least

With TCU joining the Big East, will the Big East finally jettison DePaul down to the Horizon League where they belong?

Please please please. It would be nice to get a conference victory once in awhile. Staying in the Big East would give DePaul maybe a 0.0005% chance of ever making the NCAA Tournament again, while going to the Horizon League would probably give us a 25% chance.

Unless the TCU move is football only, I don't see how they go with 17 teams in basketball (and DePaul is the only team I can see them readily giving up)

The Big East would never give up ND until they had to

TCU wanted to move in only football, but I think the MWC is making them move all sports.
