If Pujols wins the triple crown and the Cardinals don't make the playoffs, who wins?

great answer by TT, but there's no way a triple crown winner isn't getting the MVP when it's been so long since there's been one.

I had no idea Pujols was only 4 points behind Votto for the NL lead in BA. It would be cool for someone to win the Triple Crown. I'll root for Albert, but not the Cardinals.

Pujols went 3-5 tonight. So, as of right now, Pujols is tied in BA (.322) and leading in HR (33) and RBI (92).

Has anyone been close to winning the triple crown lately?

Last one I remember was Sheffield winning out in AVE and RBI but getting beat in HRs (by one or two) by then teammate Fred McGriff when they were in San Diego.

I know Hamilton is on a playoff team and all, but Miguel Cabrera has been way more bad ass than Hamilton

Way more bad ass? Better, but not much.

Bad phrasing. I wasn't suggesting Hamilton has been a hack and Cabrera has been superman.

Has anyone been close to winning the triple crown lately?

Miguel Cabrera this year would be a front runner if Jose Bautista didn't realize he was good at hitting home runs. I wish Cabrera would just start mashing... to see two potential Triple Crown winners in the same year? Wouldn't that be something special, wouldn't that be a wonderful thing?

Be even more special if they were on the Cubs. Dare to dream.

If the Cubs could have triple crown winners in both leagues in one year it truly would be amazing!

Probably the strongest case for C0-MVPs I've seen in a while. Both teams would be in a world of hurt without them, and both are within margin of error of each other.

Great race.

One team is 5 games ahead of the other. If the season ended today, Votto is the MVP.

Sadly for me, there's another month to play.

2005 DLee

He was first in batting average, second in homers, and seventh in RBI. He needed five home runs and 21 RBI to tie for the lead in those categories. I wouldn't call that close.

If memory serves, he was right at the top of everything in early August. He just couldn't fell behind after that.

If his [expletive] manager didn't keep sub 300 OBPs in front of him all year, he could've inched closer in RBI

Definitely. He was certainly hurt by the guys batting in front of him.

Add 2005 to the list of horribly depressing game logs to look over. A week and a [expletive] half of Nomar

Especially after he tore it up (no pun intended) that spring with the bat.

Sheff was never really that close. Some sorta close ones.

2009: Albert Pujols: 1st in HR, 3rd in RBI and BA

2005: Albert Pujols: 2nd in HR, RBI and BA

1998: Albert Belle: 2nd in HR and RBI, 3rd in BA

1997: Larry Walker: 1st in HR, 2nd in BA and 3rd in RBI

1995: Albert Belle: 1st in HR and RBI, 8th in BA some 40 points back.

1994: Jeff Bagwell: 1st in RBI, 2nd in HR and BA

1993: Barry Bonds: 1st in RBI and HRs, 4th in BA

What about Carlos Gonzalez? There's an interesting 3-man race for the triple crown in the NL. Obviously, any of them do it, they're the MVP. But don't discount Gonzalez, especially if the Cards don't make the playoffs and the Rockies make another run. Up to the moment.

Pujols- .313 (5th), 35 HR (1st), 95 RBI (2nd)

Votto- .325 (2nd), 32 HR (2nd), 97 RBI (1st)

CarGo- .328 (1st), 30 HR (5th), 92 RBI (3rd)

And Gonzalez spent the first 1/3 to 1/4 of the season batting leadoff or else those RBI numbers would be up, and with some ailments he's suffered, he has about 25 fewer PAs than Votto, and nearly 70 fewer than Pujols. Add in that he also steals bases, and he should be a strong MVP candidate.

Whatever I got when I traded you Gonzalez wasn't enough. :(

At this point, I assume that Pujols will not be an obvious statistical winner over the other two. And since the Cardinals suddenly decided to play football rules for awhile (by which I mean, winning one game a week = success), he's out of it.

So it'll come down to Votto or Gonzalez, depending on whether both teams make the playoffs, and which one wins the stats batte. At this point, I think Votto will get it - and deserves it (cough, this coming from a Cards fan) - over Gonzalez. PS, Adrian G is a dark horse, in my opinion, simply because I think lots of voters might ignore the other players' better stats over Adrian being so productive compared to his absurdly crappy supporting cast in SD.
