Josh Hamilton has the AL race all but locked up. Who is the National League's MVP? I just can't seem to think of anyone who jumps out. Pujols is having an off year by his standards. The Padres and Braves don't seem to have a guy who jumps out. So does it come down to Votto or Pujols?

Adrian Gonzalez doesn't jump out for the Padres?

I think it'll be a tight race between Pujols and Votto - depending on who gets to the playoffs.

Pujols wins statistically + Cards sneak in = Pujols, unless Dark Horse votes hurt him

Pujols wins statiscically but Reds win the Central = Probably a super close vote

Votto wins statistically + Reds win = Votto, for sure

Votto wins statistically but Cards sneak in = Probably Votto as a new guy, but who knows, maybe Pujols as the "He got robbed by Bonds" guy.

Just because this seems as good a place as any for it... the NL's top ten WAR is as follows:

1. Ryan Zimmerman - 6.1

2. Andres Torres - 5.4

3. Albert Pujols - 5.4

4. Joey Votto - 5.4

5. Matt Holliday - 4.7

6. Aubrey Huff - 4.6

7. Dan Uggla - 4.5

8. Adrian Gonzalez - 4.4

9. Kelly Johnson - 4.4

10. Rickie Weeks - 4.3

Marlon Byrd ranks 11th on the list, also with 4.3 WAR.

Edit:

Oh, and if you buy into the idea that pitchers should be able to win the MVP, here's the list including them.

1. Roy Halladay - 6.5

2. Ryan Zimmerman - 6.1

3. Josh Johnson -5.6

4. Andres Torres - 5.4

5. Albert Pujols - 5.4

6. Joey Votto - 5.4

7. Adam Wainwright - 5.0

8. Matt Holliday - 4.7

9. Ubaldo Jimenez - 4.7

10. Aubrey Huff - 4.6

NL MVP is Votto.

When was the last time a league MVP didn't start the ASG?

In 2008 Pujols was named the DH, so he started that way.

If you count that, then in 2007, Reyes started over Rollins.

In 2006, Howard didn't start, and Morneau didn't even make the team.

Andres Torres? This is why I hate defensive metrics.

I'm thinking Kirk Gibson in 1988.

edit: I misread the question. Gibson didn't make the all star team (or any all star team in his career) in '88. I'm not sure if any other MLB MVP failed to make the ASG the year he won the award.

You should edit again.

he's also 2nd in batting runs amongst all CFs in baseball, trailing Carlos Gonzalez by the slimmest of margins – also of note, he's virtually equivalent to Crawford, Wright and Braun by the same measure

as an aside, looking at WAR, "We-should-have-signed" Carlos Lee has been the single worst player in baseball, amongst guys who qualify for the batting title. factoring salary, he's been worth -$22M to Houston this season

If Pujols wins the triple crown and the Cardinals don't make the playoffs, who wins?

great answer by TT, but there's no way a triple crown winner isn't getting the MVP when it's been so long since there's been one.

Probably the strongest case for C0-MVPs I've seen in a while. Both teams would be in a world of hurt without them, and both are within margin of error of each other.

Great race.

That did happen once (Keith Hernandez and Willie Stargell in 1979).
