A bit more analysis from MLBTR...

The Cubs have made it clear to other teams that Carlos Zambrano is available, according to ESPN.com's Buster Olney (via Twitter). If you thought Roy Oswalt and Dan Haren had a lot remaining on their contracts, take a look at what the Cubs owe Big Z: he'll earn $6.8MM this year, $17.9MM next year, $18MM in 2012 and, possibly, a $19.25MM vesting option in 2013.

Zambrano will make at least $42.7MM more before his contract expires, and he hasn't been pitching like an ace. As usual, the big right-hander is getting lots of strikeouts (8.6 K/9) and allowing lots of walks (4.0 BB/9), but his ERA is 5.66 in 2010. Zambrano is now working his way through anger issues and back to the majors. He recently apologized for the dugout tirade that landed him on the restricted list.

Given teams' reluctance to take on payroll, the Cubs would have to absorb part of the contract in any deal. It seems far more likely that the team will hold onto Zambrano for now, since he makes so much money and has not impressed at the major league level this season.

Sure, put him on the block when his value is at its lowest ever, why not?

I'm sure it's a matter of letting teams know he's available for next winter if he rebounds. Of course if anybody is crazy enough to make a decent offer now (a pack of chewing gum), Hendry would be more than willing to trade him.

Nobody is going to take that contract, and I don't think Ricketts is letting us eat contracts at this point. I think that's part of the reason that Hendry is "safe" for next year...I think Ricketts is all about either unloading the whole (or at the least most!) contract when deals are made at this point. I think he's willing to spend, but not willing to spend on nothing.

I could see someone claiming Z on waivers, but that's about the only way I see the Cubs dealing him this year.

White Sox? I can't even see anyone claiming him on waivers.

If Alex Rios can be picked up on waivers, anything is possible.

While it would make my day to see him traded, his value is down and I don't want another Sosa-for-Fontenot scenario.

Good luck with that though.

If Zambrano ends up being as useless post-trade as Sosa was, I don't really care.

Z's owed like twice as much annually as Rios was

I don't see that happening. The Cubs could then allow the claim to go through and the claiming team would be on the hook for the entire remainder of his contract. From the Cubs' perspective that would probably be the best possible outcome.

That's pretty much how Hendry rolls.

Let's try and trade a player who's having his worst year after being relegated to the bullpen and now coming off a suspension. Oh, this time they forgot to publicly badmouth him first.

Give it time.

Heard this: The Cubs are resigned to the fact that if they are going to trade Carlos Zambrano, it will happen in the winter. #trades [via Twitter]

[expletive] YOU [expletive] MORONS

??

All that says is they will not be able to deal him in the next two days. Not that they have to trade him over the winter.

Obviously they need for Z to prove he can still pitch before trying to trade him.

It strongly indicates that they are actively trying to move him and given the Cubs tendancies quite likely means they will aggressively shop him this offseason.

Is trading Zambrano that big of deal?

The situation is not ideal, the Cubs will be paying quite a bit or have to take back a contract just as ugly. I'd assume the issues would be more to do with that and not because of any production lost from Z. I guess there is always hope that he can get back to what he used to be and everything will be fine.

Are there realistic hopes that he can be close to what he once was?

We've known for a few days that they're actively trying to shop him. It's the reason I started this thread.

All that quote adds to what we already knew is that they won't get the deal done by Saturday and, thus, will wait until the winter.
