i would love to trade z for ollie, straight up, and save ~$43 million. i hope omar does his part to bail hendry out of a horrible contract.

Indeed. We're talking about a guy that would fly through waivers unclaimed.

Jon Heyman claimed that the Cubs offered Z for Ollie Perez straight up (no mention of the Cubs throwing in any money). The Mets wanted the Cubs to take Castilo back. Perez has only one year left on his contract at $12M.

Jesus, that's even worse.

If they traded Z for just Perez, without throwing in any money? I think I'd take that.

You would trade a pitcher with an era under 4 when starting for a guy who's era has been in the 6's most of his career starting at roughly the same age? One pitches in a hitters park (Wrigley), and the other pitches in a pitchers park (New York).

I realize that people want to blow the team up, but blowing the team up and gaining less productive players at the same age is not going to end well.

If that trade were to happen, it would be more about saving 43 mil then aquiring a crappy pitcher.

It's all about the $$$. Recouping the money left on Z's deal is the obvious motivation.

And Z's days of being a sub-4.00 guy may well be over.

Trading for Perez is worse than just Z going through waivers though.

That's pretty close to even for both sides. The Mets take on Z for basically 2 1/2 years and 27 million (the difference between the salary of Perez and the one for Z). The Cubs get salary relief but probably would have to cut Perez at the beginning of the next year.

Castillo being added on also makes some sense to give the Mets slightly more relief.

They could probably meet in the middle and trade Castillo and Perez+3 million for Z. The Mets would have Z then for 2 1/2 years and around 22 million and the Cubs would have the salaries off the books a year early.

it's not about acquiring oliver perez, it's about freeing a huge chunk of money for the next 3 years that can (hopefully) be spent to get some very productive players.

The Cubs wouldn't really be saving 43 million. It would be probably somewhere between 20-30 million depending on how the deal shakes out. But that's still a nice chunk of money to have.

That could be Derrek Lees replacement right there.

As others have said, it's about cost savings going forward. Z has declining velocity and will turn 30 next year with tons of wear on his arm. We all love the guy, but he's not likely to be a sub-4 ERA pitcher from here on out. The financial flexibility would make a big difference in the next four years.

Even the proposed Perez-Castillo deal is tempting to me. Realistically, the Cubs aren't going to compete in 2011, but if they're smart (yeah, yeah) they could set themselves up nicely for 2012. The young players would have time to develop and the money from Perez, Castillo, Aramis, Silva and Fukudome would come off the books next fall, which is about $60 million. That would let them make a run at Adrian Gonzalez or Prince Fielder, plus some other quality free agents.

And for all the times people here have flipped out in recent years about the Cubs trading a player away (Sosa, DeRosa, Bradley, Jose Ceda, Will Ohman), have any of them really come back to hurt them? Sosa for Fontenot was a fine deal, because Sosa was totally done and Fontenot has contributed some. DeRosa brought a nice return. Bradley has been a disaster for Seattle and Silva has been pretty good. Jose Ceda hasn't done a thing in Florida. Will Ohman, meh.

I think the two worst trades Hendry has made are Juan Pierre (obviously) and Angel Pagan (no one saw that coming). Far more often than not, the Cubs do well on the trade market.

Edit- The Greg Maddux trade sucked, too. Forgot about that.

I'm not necessarily saying that this makes trading Z for nothing a good idea, but the constant cries of "HERE WE GO AGAIN TIME TO MAKE YET ANOTHER TERRIBLE TRADE LIKE ALWAYS" ring pretty empty.

Michael Wuertz for nothing was the worst trade.

Wuertz was really good last year and has been terrible this year. Certainly not a good move, but it's a blip on the radar.
