That first goal was all on Torres. He played poorly.

Slovenia came out and attacked the flanks, which nobody saw coming. Our defending was awful in the first. We should have finished one of the gilt-edged chances we had, and the counter/goal to go 0-2 was a killer.

We played with a ton of heart in the second. Landon stepped up big time. Clint was quieter than Saturday, but worked damned hard.

Jozy was useless.

Mikey was Mikey, for better or worse.

The ENG/ALG match is huge now.

Has there ever been a point where matches would just go on and on until someone scored? PKs are lame but so are ties and the weird tiebreakers.

I heard they would replay the entire match if it ended in a tie back in the day. That seems insane.

The FA Cup is a single elimination tourney, where draws are replayed.

The next day or what?

I think they have 4 or 5 days to play it. And the other team gets to be home.

Official FIFA scoring is the goal was disallowed on a foul by Edu.

Huh. I don't have access to replay, and from what I remember (in my itty bitty window) it looked like Edu actually came through the box relatively clean compared to the others. I'm not doubting that's what their rationale was/is--but seems awfully questionable.

So now on to several days of "these officials are taking the game away from the players" talk from the USA, Germany, etc.

The FA Cup now does extra time and PKs, I think, after a second draw. They used to just keep playing matches until someone won, which is cool.

Yeah, just one replay now. I think the record is 6 replays (under the old rules).

So we move on if we beat Algeria by multiple goals, no matter what happens. If we beat Algeria by 1, we just need England/Slovenia to not end in a draw.

England/Algeria is pretty much moot except that if they draw with Algeria, it becomes conceivable for the U.S. to advance even if they tie Algeria too.

So where do things stand for the US? If they win their next game, they'll certainly move on, yes?

They should be in, but could still miss with a win.

The bad scenarios are ones in which England and Slovenia play a high-scoring draw, and England beats Algeria by more than we do.

Here's what I've got:

We win by at least two goals and we advance on either points (an England or Slovenia win) or on goal differential (a tie). Whether we win the group or finish second depends on the other two games.

We win by one goal, England and Slovenia draw and score fewer goals than we do, we advance and win the group on goals scored.

We win by one goal, England and Slovenia draw and score more goals than we do, we're done unless England only beats Algeria 1-0 and they tie Slovenia 2-2, then Slovenia wins the group and we draw lots for second with England. If they tie 3-3 or more, we're done, Slovenia wins the group, England is second.

Then there's the scenario where we win by one goal and England and Slovenia and score as many goals as we do. Then it depends on England's result against Algeria.

-If England beats Algeria 1-0, both the US and Slovenia advance on goals scored (4 to 3) and draw lots for the group winner.

-If England beats Algeria 2-1, then we have a three-team tie where all teams have four scored and three allowed. The US and Slovenia advance due to scoring three goals in the matches between the tied teams (England only 2) and draw lots for the group winner.

-If England beats Algeria 3-2 or more (4-3, 5-4, etc), England wins the group and US and Slovenia draw lots for second place.

It would seem like playing an entire match over again is more of a hassle than just playing sudden death for as long as necessary but FIFA feels PKs are necessary?

Ahh, the fickle nature of sports fans.

In the end, I am very content to earn the draw there after the 0-2 start in the opening half, but it just really sticks in the craw when the GWing goal is disallowed not by US fault, but by a ref who was complete [expletive] the whole match. Doing something that wipes out a goal for trying too hard, ok - but seeing the winner taken back because the ref sees something that isn't there?! That's just "argh!".

They play at the same time, that should be interesting. Looks like a lot of the last games are simultaneous.

After 1982 all 3rd group games are simultaneous, to prevent shenanigans like with Germany/Austria where they played like that episode of the Simpsons with Ariaga II for 90 minutes to screw some other country.

I believe total goals is the 2nd tiebreaker, so even if the US beats Algeria by 1, England/Slovenia could still draw and the US would still move on if they score more goals than one of England/Slovenia.

The recap of the match says the foul was apparently before Edu got to the ball.

unless "striking the ball with your foot" is a foul, it pretty much had to be

The Wiki summary

Group 2 saw one of the great World Cup upsets on the first day with the 2–1 victory of Algeria over reigning European Champions West Germany. In the final match in the group between West Germany and Austria, Algeria had already played their final group game the day before, and West Germany and Austria knew that a West German win by 1 or 2 goals would qualify them both, while a larger German victory would qualify Algeria over Austria, and a draw or an Austrian win would eliminate the Germans. After 10 minutes of all-out attack, West Germany scored through a goal by Horst Hrubesch. After the goal was scored, the two teams kicked the ball around aimlessly for the rest of the match. Chants of "Fuera, fuera" ("Out, out") were screamed by the Spanish crowd, while angry Algerian supporters waved banknotes at the players. This performance was widely deplored, even by the German and Austrian fans. One German fan was so upset by his team's display that he burned his German flag in disgust.[1] Algeria protested to FIFA, who ruled that the result be allowed to stand; FIFA introduced a revised qualification system at subsequent World Cups in which the final two games in each group were played simultaneously.
