And to think, I went to bed hoping we didn't take Starling.

Seriously, that'll teach me. Someone please staple one of those game theory matrices to Wilken's forehead.

Multiple international directors expressed frustration that MLB would declare a Cuban defector draft-eligible on such short notice, suggesting that the player likely already has a deal in place with a team. Others added that they would be elated if another team used a high draft pick on Garcia Speck, who struggled with his control in Cuba.

So is it just me or does it seem like the Cubs could have just signed the guy instead of bringing light to the fact that he is draft eligible and using a draft pick on him?

Wait, the Cubs were the ones who told on him? Is that true? The stupidity reaches a new level, just when I didn't think it could go any further.

Well my thoughts are that this chain of events probably happened. Someone hears from a Cub insider that the Cubs are in on him which starts the rumor. Then the agent has to issue a letter saying my client isn't draft eligible, which in turn makes the commissioner's office have to make a ruling. If none of this happen it seems like the Cubs could have just signed him because based on comments it seems like the majority of the organizations had no idea he was draft eligible.

I didn't think it really even needed to be said, but considering how Simpson hasn't exactly lit the world on fire(and I don't care as to why honestly) one would have thought that this pick, in a loaded draft, would have been a "by the book" type of pick. Not to mention the fact that we suck complete ass on the major league level and any astute fan will see this and see little hope for the future as well.

Justin (Tinley Park): Does anyone know much about Speck and is he 1st round material?

Kevin Goldstein: I know he's 23. I know he has above-average velo. I know he has a pretty good power curve.

Bret (Toronto): Has this Speck stuff you just Tweeted all gone down today? Or has this been going on in the background and no reporters caught on into it (likely for good reason)?

Kevin Goldstein: Yes, and here's some breaking news, as this letter just came from the commissioner's office (thanks mole!)

We understand that Gus Dominguez has contacted Clubs for the purpose of asserting that Onelki Garcia is not eligible for the 2011 First-Year Player Draft, which begins this evening. Consistent with the attached, which Joel Araujo sent to your attention on Saturday, June 4, please be advised that the Office of the Commissioner has determined that Garcia has established residency in the United States and is therefore subject to the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

Based on the information we have received regarding Garcia’s residency status, it is our understanding that Garcia established residency and began working out in the United States in February 2011. We have repeatedly requested that Gus Dominguez provide us with documentary evidence supporting his claim that Garcia is a legal resident of a country other than the United States, but no such information has been provided to us. The Office of the Commissioner is, of course, unable to declare a player ineligible for the Rule 4 Draft based solely on the bare assertions of his representative that he is not a resident of the United States within the meaning of Major League Rule 4. As a result, the Office of the Commissioner has determined that Garcia is subject to the First-Year Player Draft.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

disc (Cuba!): I don't get it. Why doesn't Speck's agent want him to be drafted?

Kevin Goldstein: So he can be a free agent! More money!

Scott (Orange County): Who is Gus Dominguez?

Kevin Goldstein: The Cuban lefty's agent.

l2uff (brewerscubs.com): any team in top 8 crazy enough to take this Garcia guy so I don't have to watch the cubs "shock the world again?"

Kevin Goldstein: No, they are not.

perhaps (Chicago): Odds that the Cubs/Speck thing was floated by the Cubs as a maneuver to see if any team above them bites and a better talent falls to them?

Kevin Goldstein: 0.000000%. I'm not saying it's true, but no way that was the strategy.

Wilken just doesn't operate like that. I remember when he was talking about his Toronto streak of picks making the majors he said that several were questioned both on draft day and in the minors. He will make his pick no matter what has happened in the past.

Groovy. I guess I was just confused by all the crazy talk of conference calls, live streams, and iphones... you damn kids.

And I take back everything bad I said about Starling, Mahtook, Springer... even Lindor. Just please oh please don't make us draft a 23 year old Cuban with no semblance of control.

The only way I can fathom this being worse is if someone like Archie Bradley is still on the board when this abomination goes down.

Yeah, I've been mentally preparing for that. The worst is thinking "Oh, thank god. Rendon is somehow still on the board... I guess we don't have to worry about picking that Cuban 'kid.'"

"Oh god dammit!"

So, do we have an educated final guess at Cubs top options based on likelihood?

Feel free to jumble around:

1) Some Cuban Guy

2) Springer

3) Lindor

4) Baez

5) Starling

6) A. Bradley

7) Mahtook

8) Barnes

9) Guerrieri

10) Gray

Can someone set up a thread for the actual draft and one for discussion of Cubs picks like we've been doing the past few seasons? Thanks.

I'm cooking up an entire bag of P.F. Changs frozen General Chang's Chicken. If I'm gonna feel like [expletive] after our pick, I want it to be because I'm about to [expletive].
