A good cheap shot enhances a rivalry between rival teams. Tell me your hatred for everything Packers wasn't escalated after the cheap shot on McMahon. Tell me you never argued with a Packer fan once about whether Majik crossed the line of scrimmage when he threw that pass. Those things enhance rivalries.

As far as bringing it up, I happen to think it's relevant. I even watched a game on ESPN Classic only a few weeks ago between the Bears and Packers with lots of cheap shots and sportsmanship penalties. They are two teams that allow their emotions to be part of the game when they play each other.

Right, but how can you possibly suggest there's never been a cheap shot in the Vikings/Packers rivalry?

I'm just saying that nothing stands out to me that would fuel the rivalry. Maybe there are some, but I am not aware of them. Martin hitting McMahon so late after the play can be played today and it would set off a whole new spark of rage once again. It's the type of play that creates the rivalry. The same can be said about the Cubs/Cards. LaRussa claiming that the Cubs are stealing signs fuels the rivalry. Controversy helps set the tone of a bitter rivalry. Without controversy, it's unlikely to be bitter.

You're a Bears fan, of course that hit stands out more than any Packers/Vikings hit. But that also just points out the time factor. That hit was 3 decades ago. A generation doesn't know much, in anything abou tit, and that hit was against the Bears, so Bears fans are going to care more. Packers fans don't care as much as you. Younger fans don't care as much as you. To you, Bears Packers is bigger. To a GB fan, Vikings matters more. To a younger Packers fan, Vikings is probably all that matters.

I suppose that makes me a pretty bad judge. I am a Bears fan and where I live I don't know of any "young" Packer fans. The Packers fans I know all consider the Bears/Packers rivalry as the true rivalry. I've lived in San Diego for nearly a generation now (nearly as long as Favre has been in the NFL), so I guess I am out of touch a bit.

When the Cardinals come to Chicago the park is overrun with rednecks wearing red.

This sounds dubious. Any Cardinals fans I've ran into in St. Louis were not rednecks. Alcoholics, maybe, but you have to go west until you find redneck Cardinals fans. And I highly doubt those people have the money to just jet off to Wrigley. They have to hold up signs calling people "morans."

have you never been to south county?

Bingo. Perhaps the rednecks don't travel north much, but they are in full display here. I don't even like to go to games here anymore because it's just full of dumbasses. TBBFIA my ass.

In my experience, Cards fans care much more about the rivalry than we do. It goes hand-in-hand with the general inferiority complex they have about Chicago, similar to what KC has with St. Louis. I was driving through Soulard the other day (a neighborhood in St. Louis) and saw a "Cubs suck" sticker on a stop sign. Really? Come on. You can go to any Cards game here, regardless of the opponent, and you'll see vendors selling shirts with billy goats on them and various other "Cubs suck" shirts.

I'm not saying it's not a rivalry for us too, cuz it is. But I guess because there is less going on here or because it's something that makes them feel good about themselves, they dwell on the Cubs an awful lot. But to be that wrapped up with a team that hasn't won [expletive] in forever, it's stupid.

KC >>> Denver is also a huge rivalry. I went to a Broncos/Chiefs game at Arrowhead and the hatred/vitriol thrown at Denver fans is amazing. Even a father and mother sitting with two kids under 10 (all wearing Bronco gear) were cursed at. It was so bad they had to bail early in the 3rd quarter.

Kansas City has a HUGE inferiority complex.

There are stupid anti-Sox and anti-Cards shirts at Cubs games regardless of opponent too. That's a poor judge because these independent vendors aren't representative of the fan base.

I haven't spent a ton of time in Chicago, but from my memory those types of shirts aren't so widespread that you can find them in malls. That's the case in St. Louis.

Right, and not only are the vendors selling them, the "fan base" is wearing them.

But the "Cuck the Fubs" t-shirt was the only clean thing dad had to wear for dinner at Imo's.

mjohnson71, you saying that there are rednecks in St. Louis is not accurate. The counties, like Washington and Jefferson County have rednecks.

And St. Louis County has rednecks falling out of their jorts. The redneck @ Black Thorn Pub who told me about burying his mom in her nylon Cards jacket was a city resident. It's not like there's a designated neighborhood where all the rednecks reside, but have no doubt, they're highly adaptable to/can thrive in urban settings. St. Louis isn't an exception.

Vikings-Packers is a bigger rivalry than Bears-Packers. I'm a Bears fan and I can easily see that.

As a Packer fan I want to beat the Bears and consider them a rival but when the Packers lose to the Vikings I can barely function the next day. And that was before Favre. This year losing to them twice felt almost as bad as the playoffs loss.

Good point. I haven't been to STL since I was a kid (and I'm a better man for it), so I have no frame of reference there.

It's quite interesting over there. And yes they really really hate the Cubs. I was there in August 08 and I just so happened to pack a Cubs shirt and wore it one Saturday. Oh and it just so happened that the Cubs were playing the Cardinals but at Wrigley Field, and on that particular day the Cubs got blown out (but won the series anyways). I got approached by at least 7 St. Louis residents whose comments ranged from friendly banter, to assholes who told me I wasn't welcomed in St. Louis wearing that.

Meanwhile, I see idiots walking around in Cardinals gear all the time in Lakeview and no one thinks twice. I mean part of it is that area of Chicago (and Chicago in general) being a transplant city, so its not unusual to see people in Chicago wearing Cardinals/Tigers/Brewers/Twins/Indians gear (probably the most common in that order).

Reading all the twist and turns of this thread cracks me up.

Anyway the Cubs/Cards rivalry is probably the 2nd best rivalry in all of baseball. I don't see how anyone can say either team has a better rival. As far as some of the teams other rivals I see it like this:

Cubs/Brewers=Cardinals/KC-The Cubs/Brewers may hold a slight edge because it's a divisional game.

Cubs/Whitesox-The only thing you can compere this rivalry to IMO are when the NY teams play. It's a different kind of rivalry because of the proximity.

The cardinals have 1 big rivalry and 1 minor one. While the Cubs have 2 big rivals and one 1 minor one.

cubs-brewers is not a rivalry

To brewers fans it is. Going to a brewers game in recent years...it's definitely turned into a big rivalry. Especially in their minds.

Agreed. They also had a big "Take Back Miller Park" campaign for Cubs games because they were sick of Cubs fans turning it into Wrigley North. That lasted about half a season.

As a south city resident, I know this to be 100% true. Basically Carondelet = Festus.

.

I've been in the Navy for 13 years. Ive been stationed in various places in the US and out. I've met and befriended literally hundreds of baseball fans. Most fans only interact with people in their local area, or on boards such as these, but I work with and hang out with fans from almost every state on a daily basis.

In my experience the Cubs-Cardinals rivalry is only relevant to Cub and Cardinal fans. The San Fran-LA and Mets-Phillies rilvary is much more acknowledged by the casual fan than Cards-Cubs. At least in my circles, but they are broader than the average.

That's because the midwest is flyover country to most people.

As far as very recent history is concerned, I can agreee with the Mets/Phillies thing. Between the Mets back to back collapses in a heated race with Philly, and the general disdain between Philly and NY in all sports, not to mention the proximity, it's a big deal. But rivalry means a few different things, what's hot at the moment and what is always a big rivalry. Cubs/Cards is not nearly as big nationwide as many Cubs/Cards fans assume, but it's up there.

That said, Mets/Phils is only relavent to Mets/Phils fans, Yanks/Red Sox is only relavent to their fans, and thee people who make money off it. Giants/Dodgers is only relavent to their fans, but that includes both east and west coast fans, since they moved and retain a fan base.
