Answer me this Ricky, how many of your friends have a strong irrational dislike bordering on hatred of the Royals? Rivals usually bring out strong feelings about the other team. Look at the statements made about the Cardinals made on this thread? How much of that do you hear from Card fans about the Royals? I wager you there aren't as many threads started on any Cards fan forum in a MONTH as there are about the Cubs in a single DAY or about MIL/CIN in a week

If you think this is a rivalry, you have some very weak standards for a rivalry

The Royals-Cards rivalry is, in a sense, like the White Sox-Cubs rivalry.

I would add the Rays v. Red Sox as a growing rivalry.

Probably bigger than Red Sox-Yankees at this point due to recent playoff battles. Red Sox-Yankees is just a traditional rivalry anyways.

If the White Sox had been baseball-irrelevant the last 15 years and were finishing last in their division 9 times out of 10, maybe.

Yeah, but the 85 WS still rubs many Cardinal fans the wrong way.

I can't believe this debate is approaching three pages of posts.

Did you read the thread? It is about 3 posts saying it isn't a rivalry anymore, 30 posts laughing at that notion and the rest being arguments about different rivalries.

This is sorta like the Packer-Vikings in football. I don't like the Bears and I do consider it a rivalry but no where close to the rivalry between the Packers and Vikings. I consider the Cubs-Brewers a rivalry, but I understand some Cub fans saying no its not.

I think its pretty obvious that I didn't.

April Fools joke?

Only in bizzaro world is Packers-Vikings (or Bears-Vikings) bigger than Bears-Packers.

I think Packers-Vikings increased as a rivalry this past year because of Brett Favre, but on the whole Bears-Packers is the biggest rivalry in the NFC North and it isn't even close.

Honestly I think only Bears fans think that. I doubt you'd find many Packers fans who'd agree, and I'd say that goes back before Favre jumped ship.

Yep. The Packers fans I knew at UW-Madison unanimously thought their main rival was the Vikings. Considering the Packers beat the Bears like a drum throughout a good chunk of the 90s and 00s, and also considering the Vikings were much more competitive against the Packers over that stretch, a lot of Packers fans don't see the Bears as being on nearly the same level as the Vikings.

I agree. To me, the Vikings are the football equivilent of the Cardinals: I despise them and all they represent. I don't care much for the Bears either, but I hate the Vikings much, much more than them.

Then we are getting back to the argument about two teams being good at the same time equaling rivalry. I think you'd have a hard time finding people arould the nation who believe Packers-Vikings is bigger than Bears-Packers. In fact I'd challenge anyone to find some sort of list which says it.

Come on. Watch any Packers/Bears game and you will see the rivalry oozing out of the pores of both teams the entire game. Cheap shots, sportsmanship penalties, breaking up fights regularly, etc....

I don't know how anyone can even remotely say that the Vikings/Packers is a bigger rivalry.

Minnesota doesn't even play on a real football field. Packers and Bears is hard-nosed, break all the rules action on either playing field. Besides that, the Packers and Bears go back and extremely long ways together, making them a candidate for a top 10 rivalry in all major pro sports.

Show me one game clip where either a Viking or a Packer was guilty of a cheap shot against one another. The Packers and Bears have so many, it's choosing which ones were the worst, with Martin throwing McMahon to the turf 10 seconds after the play was over as the big winner. Add in classic finishes like Majkowski crossing the line of scrimmage on the pass play that cost the Bears the game in the final seconds, and the rivalry only grows stronger.

Packers and Bears have real fans that sit in the elements to watch their teams. Minnesota probably has more bandwagon fans than actual fans who live in Minnesota. Very few of them remember what it's like to sit in the elements to watch an outdoor football game.

I think it's fairly obvious. Since the 90's, the Vikings/Packers has been a much more consistent big rivalry between good teams. Anybody under, let's say 30, with limited memory of the 80's, who is a Packers fan probably thinks the Vikings are a bigger rival. I see nothing wrong with suggesting it. The Bears were not relavent to anybody for a decade.

I'm going to guess there are plenty. Why would you even bring this up?

A good cheap shot enhances a rivalry between rival teams. Tell me your hatred for everything Packers wasn't escalated after the cheap shot on McMahon. Tell me you never argued with a Packer fan once about whether Majik crossed the line of scrimmage when he threw that pass. Those things enhance rivalries.

As far as bringing it up, I happen to think it's relevant. I even watched a game on ESPN Classic only a few weeks ago between the Bears and Packers with lots of cheap shots and sportsmanship penalties. They are two teams that allow their emotions to be part of the game when they play each other.

My brother has lived in the Milwaukee area for the past 6+ years. I remember talking to him after he had lived there a couple years and he said Minnesota is much much more hated by Packers fans. Like most, including myself, he thought the Bears were the bigger rival but Minnesota really is to Packers fans. The way he puts it is Packers fans tend to dislike the Bears because they are Chicago and they are supposed to dislike all things Chicago but Packers fans hate Minnesota because the two states hate each other and are rivals at everything.

Right, but how can you possibly suggest there's never been a cheap shot in the Vikings/Packers rivalry?

Yeah, it's really two different things. The Bears and Packers will always play each other tough, but the Vikings supplanted the Bears as the Packers' "real" rival a long time ago.

I guarantee you'd find plenty of Packers fans that think that. Some of them have already posted in this thread. I'm not sure how you seem so confident that everyone thinks Bears-Packers is bigger when I'd bet my life on it being pretty much the opposite at this point.
