That thing is hideous.

If wrigley is going to try signage, they need to go the Fenway route and regulate how they look so as not to distract from the ballpark

I bet they never thought about it that way.

Who gives a crap?! Just get to the damned World Series! You can put strippers on the pitcher's mound for the 7th inning stretch...I don't care! I just want a World Series!

You say it like "strippers on the pitcher's mound for the 7th" is a bad thing?

Well presumably it would require a pole to be installed, and then we'd be even worse than the Astros.

Jokes aside, the longer ad board looks much better than the shorter and taller one. IMO. At least individually, but the shorter/taller one looks better with the long one next to it, while I really only like the look of the longer one standing alone.

Someone should email Drayton McLane, Jr. and plant this little kernel...

I can totally picture Michael Bourn colliding with Kiki Bubbles while chasing an errant fly.

Boo [expletive] hoo. Do they not have zoning out in Nebraska?

What's got Cubs Chairman Tom Ricketts sounding more like an ornery Lou Piniella than most observers thought possible are the responsibilities that come with owning Wrigley Field, the baseball stadium fans seem to view as their own personal shrine.

Politics and opposition by a Wrigleyville building owner have so far handcuffed his plan to generate more revenue by erecting a Toyota advertisement behind the left-field bleachers, Ricketts complained Friday. He said he knew that an illuminated, 360-square-foot sign would stir some debate about preserving the tradition and ambience of the ballpark, but he's surprised to be still wrestling with the controversy.

Ricketts, in a meeting Friday with the Chicago Tribune's editorial board, suggested that the family's future investment in projects in the Wrigleyville community hinges on the approval of the sign. His family bought the team and stadium from Tribune Co., parent of the Chicago Tribune, last fall in a deal valued at $845 million.

"I have a lot of other dollars that can be invested in Wrigleyville, or not," Ricketts said.

I'm about as traditional as they come regarding Wrigley, but for crying out loud --- do it. Ads, jumbo tron, sausage races, whatever they think will generate money to put into bringing a World Series to the northside.

I think a big Toyota sticker on Cecelia Ricketts' forehead would be a terrific revenue generator. It sure wouldn't be any more out of place than what he proposed.

I draw the line at sausage races.

What I don't get is why people are so against this from a historical prospective. If they had the ability to make money off it and the ability to produce it, they would have put this sign up in the 1920s.

Have you seen photos of ballparks from the early 20th Century? Commercialism was rampant in MLB parks, save for one.

"I do not currently support the placement of a 360-square-foot Toyota sign in Wrigley Field as it is not in keeping with the character of the neighborhood or with the spirit of the city's landmarks ordinance," Tunney said in front of a packed room at the landmarks commission meeting.

And the Alderman comes out of nowhere with a folding chair!

Go Tunney.

I've been to 2 games at Fenway this year. The advertising is part of the experience. As long as they leave the Ivy and the scoreboard alone, I'm okay with it. If you mess with either of those, you might as well build new (to which I am also not opposed)

If only Wrigley had put up ads in the 1920's we'd have 27 championships, too. Stupid owners.

Out of character with the neighborhood? There's giant freaking advertisements every step you take in the neighborhood.

The rooftops association is to blame for all of this mess. As if it isn't enough they're making millions off of someone else's product, they now want to dictate terms onto said product.

Time for more windscreens. I've had enough of those idiots.

And the only thing this sign would block is the rooftop billboard across the street. I bet the alderman is getting some kickbacks from the building owner.
