I've heard rumors that Brey hooked up with someone who worked at a local news station, but that's all I've heard. My info is limited because the ND board I frequent has essentially issued a gag order on discussing it.

I have a fondness for Fred Hoiberg. Mainly because of his nick name.

he's being mentioned as a candidate for the coaching job. can't say i'm on board with that.

Not sure I am either, but you might want to get used to the idea...

Hoiberg Next ISU Head Coach

He's not called "The Mayor" for nothing so he should excite the fanbase, but the lack of coaching experience isn't good, and it's gonna suck if it doesn't work out.

From zagsblog:

“Mike Brey is the basketball coach at Notre Dame,” university spokeswoman Bernadette Cafarelli said Tuesday afternoon by phone.

I like the way she put that. Sounds like some careful wording. Well hey he hasn't been fired yet! :hello:

Hey I talked to that woman about an internship! (That I didn't get an interview for.)

Yeah, I don't know what's going on. It'd be really nice if we didn't have to go coach-hunting right now.

It's like the B.J. Armstrong to Iowa stuff but worse. At least B.J. is in with WW Wes. There's upside but there's also high potential for a total bust. And that results in you complaining about one of your favorite players of all-time and wanting him fired because he's a failure.

Mike Brey isn't going anywhere and that comes straight from the lips of a senior athletic department official right into my little ears yesterday.

FWIW, from a well-respected member of the ND board I frequent. Looks like we're alright.

Carlino is expected to commit to UCLA later this week and skip his senior year of HS.

eh, it's not like he's been out of basketball bagging groceries or something. i don't know how i feel about it, but it's not like they passed on a homerun guy like tom izzo or something. i mean, who were they going to get? the illinois state coach? meh. the important thing is, their best recruiter is staying on.

somehow this escaped me, but found out earlier this week that holy cross fired their coach (former ND assistant coach) after one year at holy cross. we were picked to win the league and ended something like 10-23, one of the worst years in school history. apparently the AD interviewed players after the season about whether to keep or can the coach, and the players gave a resounding vote of non-support. i guess if you made a mistake in the hire it's better to figure it out sooner rather than later, but if you know after a year that the guy sucks, then you really didn't do your homework the first time.

And you call yourself a Crusader...

I asked a question about him like two weeks back when he was rumored as a possible assistant under McCaffery at Iowa. Doesn't look like that's happening though.

sorry, i don't check this thread often. obviously being fired after one year as a head coach does not speak well to his abilities. like i said, our team badly underachieved this year and injuries were not a big problem. my observation - just from looking at box scores - was that defense really went downhill this season. under coach willard we were always strong defensively; this year we were one of the worst teams in the nation at forcing turnovers and using pomeroy's adjusted defense stat, we were #288 in the nation (compared with #118 last year and spending a lot of the willard years between #30 and #100). we also turned the ball over too much. i don't know if the new coach was totally to blame for the problems, but like i said, holy cross was picked to win the league with largely the same team that made the PL finals the previous year, and we were 9-22. obviously something was wrong.

if the hawkeyes wanted to be dangerous, they'd go get tracy webster.

I'd love Webster to get that last assistant spot. I doubt it happens though, but who knows.

You know, CPL coaches love hyping up Webster, but what did they ever send to Illinois while he was there? Is it just Calvin Brock? Was Aaron Spears CPL?

was stan simpson a webster recruit?

Don't think so, he was busy recruiting for Kentucky on our dime at the time. Liggins and Miller signed with UK before Simpson did at Illinois.

An Illinois fan posted the same thing on an Iowa board the other day. His reputation seems to be a lot greater than the results he's produced.

Wait, Aaron Spears was way before Webster was around. I don't know what I was thinking there.

He also brought in no CPL players in his brief stints at Kentucky or DePaul. So his reputation seems to be based on Calvin Brock and the fact that he went to Thornwood. (Which isn't even CPL)

he brought in richmond, who isn't cpl, either.

Well yeah, I'm not trying to say he can't recruit(I want to say he was the lead on McCamey), I just don't get where this Tracy Webster, friend of the CPL thing came from.

public league coaches just wanted to run their mouths and rattle their sabres. but that said, webster couldn't hurt iowa's chances in the public league.
