I believe the Cubs can compete for the division if some things work out - Soto bouncing back, Soriano, etc. but, it's the Cubs and what can go wrong usually does go wrong. Leaving them hovering around .500 finishing 3rd or 4th, typical Cubs.

While I agree that it seems that whatever can go wrong will go wrong for the Cubs, I can't see a 3rd or 4th place finish. Most everything went wrong last year and they finished over .500 and in 2nd place. Everything would have to go right for the Reds, Brewers, or Astros to finish ahead of the Cubs.

Perhaps this is the year that the stars align for the Reds who finally get some pitching to support their good young hitters. Of course people have been saying that for about 7 years now.

Why the Reds? No offense but, why the hell can't they align for the Cubs?

Vitters will have a monster season in the minors. We trade for Webb at the deadline giving up Mr. Vitters plus some other scratch. Afterwards, it is caddy bar the door time.

Webb

Z

Lilly

Dempster

Wells

Playoff rotation of excellence. The WS crown in 11 straight dominating victories of pure Chicago Cubs baseball bliss.

I have the D'Backs winning more games than the Cubs this year. I don't see the Cubs getting Webb.

I wasn't being serious. Even with Webb, Lincecum, and Halladay we would get bounced in the NLDS.

As a Cub fan do you really need to ask this question?

Not really but, I thought this could be the year they align for the Cubs, right. Who am I kidding!

This would be supremely grand news!

Ted Lilly said Wednesday that his surgically-repaired shoulder feels strong and that he would like to be ready for Opening Day.

We're sure the Cubs would like that as well. Lilly underwent arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder in early November and early projections had him missing the first month of the 2010 season. We'll see what kind of progress he makes this spring. The 34-year-old southpaw went 12-9 with a career-best 3.10 ERA and a 1.06 WHIP in 27 starts last year for Chicago.

I would like to bang Scarlett Johansson but I'm not likely to get the chance.

Ted Lilly saying he would like to be ready on Opening Day is kind of meaningless.

Almost everything did go wrong for the Cubs last year, outside of Lee and Lilly. Even with expected bounce-back seasons from a few key guys this team is much worse than it was last year. They are going to struggle to stay around .500 most of the year.

However, the season will still be a success because Hendry will be fired as a result.

2011 will be better than 2010.

The cubs will win 91 games, beating out the cardinals by 5 games!

This team is truly a coin flip, they could be very good or very bad. However, I do feel some major bounce backs from Soto and Soriano, with that being said I will stick to my guns @ 91 wins.

Cubs pitching has plenty of depth, as long as Lilly does not miss more than 1 month we are fine.

Some of our best years have started out as a big question mark in February.

I'm not counting this team out until I see the actual results. I may be bracing for mediocrity, but I'm still hoping for a surprise -- and it could happen.

I'll go with a win total in the low 80s, with the team being in contention until August, and then slowly falling out of it.

Barring a major deadline deal that nets a first rate starter or masher for RF, I agree.

I think the NL Central is one of the weakest divisions in baseball and everyone but the pirates and maybe the Astros have a shot at it. Just depends on which team stays healthiest and which young players break out. Health is the bigger concern for the Cubs and Cardinals, youth breaking out is the bigger concern for the Reds/Brewers.

So the consensus is that hopefully less injuries and lack of unluckiness will overshadow age regression? For how many wins? 2? I think it's most likely we miss the playoffs, but not so unlikely that I'm going into the season without a lot of interest.
