The Cubs don't expect a last-minute settle with Ryan Theriot before his arbitration hearing, and are ready to go to battle with their starting shortstop.

Theriot asked for $3.4 million, and the Cubs filed at $2.6 million. Hearings are scheduled for the next two weeks in St. Petereburg, Fla., and there's been no recent negotiating between the two sides.

"I haven't spoken to his people for a while," general manager Jim Hendry said Tuesday at Wrigley Field. "There's always a chance (for a settlement) until it's final. But I can't say I'm optimistic, either. We're already settled with the other seven (arbitration-eligible players). So if the situation ends up going to a hearing, then that's OK too.

"Everbody has a right to (a hearing). It won't affect, obviously, the way we feel about him or the way he plays."

the cubs will have nsbb in the room to evaluate theriot's defense during the hearing.

Are you guys going to be "scouts" or "stats people" with Theriot's defense? :D

mostly i hear on this board that theriot's defense is God-awful, so NSBB will be the scouts crowd. theriot will bring UZR as his support.

Any smart person would split the difference and say he's average, give or take a couple runs.

But that's not the way the arbitration process works and, by golly, it isn't the way the internet works either.

can somebody tell me if facial hair is accounted for in the arbitration process

For first year arb-eligible players, just the left sideburn and mustache. Second year arb-eligible get to include the other sideburn and any hair on the chin. It's not till the final year that you get to include the full beard.

When is his arbitration hearing? I keep seeing a bunch of other hearings and didn't know how long this usually took.

Article on Cubs.com said it's going to be either Friday or Saturday and Hendry is flying down to Florida (where the hearing is) tomorrow.

From The Cub Reporter:

Z was taking grounders at shortstop today. As one Cubs blogger noted, Z has out OPS'd Theriot over the last two years. Watch your back little man.

:-)) :-)) :-))

I don't quite understand why the hearings have to be in Florida. Since they are planning these for late February, when players are arriving at spring training, doesn't it make much more sense to have hearings in Florida and Arizona?

On facebook, the article the Cubs posted about Theriot's arbitration mostly got a lot of comments such as "Theriot IS our team. GIVE HIM THE MONEY!" and "He's one of the BEST SS's in baseball... I see this being ANOTHER DeRosa deal. Get with it, Hendry!"

It made me VERY embarrassed to be a Cubs fan.

Whelp, the streak is over. There was no last minute deal before the hearing.

Figure expected to come tomorrow.
