Re: Cubs upset with Theriot?

This is just speculation, but it sites Bruce Miles who said the Cubs aren't pleased with Theriot's arbitration negotiation.

Link[/url]"]Word has it that the Cubs front office is angered with Ryan Theriot due to the amount that Theriot submitted for arbitration figure. Theriot submitted a $3.4 million figure, while the Cubs submitted a $2.6 million figure. And Theriot has yet to back off from his original demand.

Bruce Miles, who was on 670 the score today, hinted that Theriot is running the risk of being a player that the Cubs look to trade, or non-tender after the coming season. Because many feel that touted Shortstop Starlin Castro will be ready by the time the 2010 season is over. Meaning he could be a threat to Theriot’s job security as the starting shortstop.

God, I want Castro to do well just to give this little turd the boot more than anything else.

Yeah, I know I have an irrational hatred towards Theriot.

It's not irrational. Scrappy McGritterson is buying into his own hype as the new (and white) Mr. Cub and it annoys the crap out of me.

Great, more ammo for internet Cub fans to hate on Theriot.

Seriously, you'd think on a team where guys like Bradley and Zambrano pull obnoxious stunts with the press and guys like Soriano and Ramirez are constantly injured, the one player who has been consistently and quietly doing his job would get a break. Granted, he's never gone above and beyond but he's also done nothing to deserve the unwarranted disrespect he gets on this forum and others.

You mean like calling out team members like he did last year?

The team needs to get better. Theriot is playing at one of the few positions that can be improved upon. We have no trade clauses clogging up LF, RF, 1B, 3B. CF we just signed someone to a multi year deal. So that leaves C, SS, 2B to improve. Our C won ROY 2 years ago, so despite a horrible season last year it makes more sense to stay cheap here and see if he can bounce back. That leaves 2B and SS. Theriot was an alright peace when he was making 700k. On a team where there is enough talent around you can get away with an adequate SS with obvious holes, Theriot is fine. But there are obvious issues in his game. He is not a natural SS and has well below average there. Strike one. He hits decently, but provides no power and inconsistent OBP. Strike two. He wants to make $3.4 million and thinks his .712 OPS last year enables this. Strike three. Oh and there is a cheaper, higher ceiling player waiting to take over at SS. So yeah, eventually I do want Theriot gone, or maybe platoon at SS. Not to say I don't appreciate him coming out of nowhere to give us an average performance at SS the last few years, but he's not the long term answer like the Cubs seemingly have treated him like.

so we should think less of the character of soriano/ramirex just because their bodies don't hold up as well? that doesn't seem very fair, unless you're implying that their injuries are a result of poor conditioning and work ethic.

and bradley/zambrano are better players than theriot, sooooooooooo

Whether you like Theriot or not, he has every right to ask for 3.4 million. Hes a league average shortstop and league average shortstops make more than that. I'm not saying hes worth the numbers fangraph comes up with, and I wouldn't argue if you said he was replaceable. The fact remains though that a league average shortstop has every right to ask for 3.4 million.
