Former Clemson University football star Gaines Adams, 26, died this morning after he was taken to the Emergency Room at Self Regional in Greenwood, County Coroner James T. Coursey said.

Adams, a defensive end, was the fourth player chosen in the 2007 National Football League draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He was traded from Tampa Bay to the Chicago Bears in October.

An autopsy will be performed today by a forensic pathologist in Anderson County, Coursey said.

Cripes. Do we get our draft pick back?

I believe the Bears will get a compensatory 2nd round pick.

Yeah right.

The Bears got nothing from a 2nd round pick. I guess there's nothing new there.

Really? That seems weird to me.

I was being sarcastic, but that would be great if true.

Oh, also, condolences and such.

If he had a pre-existing heart condition, isn't that something that should have been caught in a physical?

Not necessarily. Defects often can go undetected unless invasive examination occurs.

just about to watch the hawks on nbc and jimmy roberts just blew my mind.

what in the world happened? a young dude like that dying under mysterious circumstances smells like suicide, if they said something about working out or at a gym, I'd assume heart defect.

Geez.

I don't see how the Bears could get a comp pick out of this.

this really is a cherry on top of one of the most disappointing sports seasons I've ever witnessed

Poor dude, but a magnificent failure of an organization in all aspects

Comp picks are based on free agent loss/gain, and applied the next offseason. So if you lose more than you gain in FA, you get a comp pick. Depending on the talent/contract of the players you lose, you get a higher or lower pick. Not really sure he would count as a FA "loss".

Anyways it all really doesn't matter. That pick was a sunk asset nyways, and the more important thing here is that a really young man just passed away. Way too young. RIP Gaines.

This is crazy. I don't know how to feel. It's ironic that my teams have been on the other side of this a few times. Darryl Kile and Kyle McClelland have died for the Cards when they were playing the CUbs. Bears played the Redskins right around the death of Sean Taylor.

I feel bad for the Adams family. And because he was traded this year, it affects 2 different organizations.

suicide? That would be like fifth or sixth on my list of guesses. My first guess with a successful young athlete dying under mysterious circumstances would be drugs.
