Sullivan sees Sheets slotting in nicely in front of Carlos Zambrano, Ryan Dempster and Ted Lilly in the Chicago rotation, with Randy Wells and newly-acquired Carlos Silva also serving as starting options.

Hahaha

Because you know...their pitching skill is roughly equivalent and all....

On a side note, did anyone see that article over the weekend that suggested that Rothschild has been watching video of Silva and noticed some flaws in his delivery that he was going to work on. If Rothschild were able to make Silva a quality starter(I know we are talking Duncan-like pixie dust and all), would he finally get some credit?

I didn't see that article but it is an excellent point.

Rothschild took heat when he sat back and let Dusty treat some guys recklessly, but given the fact that pitching has been the only consistently positive aspect of this team for the pact decade, Rothschild has been given credit. It's the hitting that has disappointed. The one thing he hasn't done is turn nobodies into studs, like Duncan. His specialty has been getting more out of guys with tremendous stuff but shaky performance.

Without having a much clearer picture of where Sheets is physically, it's awfully hard to know what to make of this.

I think we'd all agree that a healthy Sheets would be awesome, but the guy didn't get a single offer last year (IIRC) and sat out the entire season.

It's only been one season, but Randy Wells wasn't much of a somebody. You could argue the same with Glendon Rusch.

I'd say the most impressive thing has been Ryan Dempster, competent starter.

I can only comment on my recent memory. But it seemed in 2008, every time Sheets tried to come back, his elbow hurt, or his shoulder hurt, or he had a problem with his finger. Seems like something was always happening and seems extremely injury prone if you ask me. Sure I'd love a healthy Sheets, but I don't think we'll get that. When was the last time he was fully healthy or atleast mostly healthy?

Wasn't Sheets offered arbitration last year? If I remember correctly, the combination of losing a draft pick, and the possibility he might not pitch all year killed his value last off season.

This would be an excellent risk to take.

Sheets healthy for a third or half of the season at 5-6MM is a much better option than Silva starting and having another bullpen lackey being on the roster for that same period of time.

I wish Bruce would stop by and let us know if something has changed on this front, by the way......It could very well just be Sullivan with some lazy journalism right here, seeing Rosenthal picked us to wind up with Sheets. The reason I bring this up, is because Bruce made it sound like it MAY be something we consider only if he's still out there unsigned come mid-February and is willing to take a VERY incentive-laden deal at that point. Bruce seemed to say that we were scraping together money for a veteran reliever and POSSIBLY a 4th OFer.

Hopefully though, this is the Ricketts seeing a possible great value laying around late in the offseason and giving the OK to bump payroll a bit in order to get it done.

Didn't Sheets pitch 200 innings in 2008?

Wouldn't we have to wait a while for him to work out the kinks and actually be Ben Sheets? Isn't that the best case scenario with most major surgeries? Like a year or at least most of a year?

Not that I wouldn't be pleased with the move... would be a great move, IMO.

Go for it, I know it's pathetic but, even should he never throw a pitch as a Cub, sign him. Anything to keep him from the Cards, I can see it now - they sign Sheets, he misses another season, then steps right in for Carpenter in 2011.

Muskat tweets his asking price doesn't fit our budget. Yeah well if his asking price is $10+m guaranteed he isn't going to fit into anyones [expletive] budget. Just because he is asking for something doesn't mean he will get it and it's just a ploy by his agent and a rough starting point for negotiations.

That's some starting pitching depth right there

Maybe you are right. I don't have a great memory. Getting 200 quality innings out of Sheets would be wonderful.

Please and thank you to something like 2/12 for Sheets with incentives for IP. Even at 100 IP a year he's a good value, as long as his stuff isn't completely gone.

That would be a very smart risk and I really hope it happens.

A rotation of

Z

Sheets

Lilly

Dempster

Wells

would defintely raise my faith in the 2010 Cubs.

Mine too. We really need that extra arm after losing Harden, and if Sheets is right, he's that guy. I just want every single doctor on the cubs staff and in the greater Chicagoland area to examine him completely.

Dusty was going to use guys recklessly no matter what Larry said. Baker was his boss and had the final say. I don't blame Rothschild one bit for how Dusty treated the pitching staff.

Congratulations, but the point was that Larry has been getting credit for a while now, and there's no need to worry about when he will finally get that credit.

if ben sheets thinks he is getting 10-12 million per year for 2 years then i can only assume that he has been in a coma for the last year.

The 2 years part I like though. Maybe 10-12 million per, if he meets all the incentives (as has been suggested).

texas was going to sign him until they found out he needed surgery

btw, for the right price, i'd take sheets overall IP and performance from pretty much any of his season other than 2009 (obviously).

he doesn't have to pitch close to 200 inning to help the team, and an incentive based deal owuld help protect against overpaying.

TUESDAY, 11:50am: MLB.com's Carrie Muskat tweets that Cubs officials say Sheets' current asking price does not fit their budget. Sheets' agent Casey Close could stand to do a better job controlling the information on his client, because the reports of a $10-12MM demand make him look bad. Muskat says the Cubs are still looking for right-handed relief.

I know. Its just the stupidity of the situation. If it werent for Hendry, Grabow would be very lucky to get a 2 year/4 mil deal, but no, Hendry had to jump in and outbid himself, and now there are some key pieces out there that we could have for cheap.
