Paterno is essentially talking about how he doesn't want to be in a position where he poops himself in public.

Again. Poops himself in public again.

The media found it a bit humorous at first.

Then everyone just got sad when he kept talking about it.

In case anyone didn't hear:

-Delaney said they expect to have the divisional alignments within 30-45 days. Didn't rule out anything with the divisions and repeated what he's said before. Said they'll use data similar to the way the basketball selection committee does. They'll mainly focus on data since 1993.

-They will have a championship game next year as expected. The site will be announced this fall but it may just be a one-year location so they can take more time to focus on a long-term arrangement.

-He wants to have a 9 game conference schedule within 2-4 years which I think is good overall but could have some problems.

UGA has made everyone forget that their AD was fired over a panty-enhanced DUI.

The guy at 1:22 reading his book upside-down was probably the high point.

Damn I need college football to start.

i'm pretty sure that he's kind of a figurehead at this point... the coordinators must do all the work. an 83 year old man just cannot run a major college football team.

so what is the obstacle preventing him for retiring? ego? not knowing what he'll do without a job? He was a great coach I guess, but no one wants to see him pass away on the job. He's beyond the point of retiring gracefully.

The fact that he loves coaching, and Bear Bryant.

He passed Bear on the W column some time ago....Bowden is out of coaching....I understand he loves coaching, but he isn't really coaching anymore. he's a mascot...or that is my perception anyway.

Not dying immediately after he retires like Bryant did.

Paterno's not a mascot. He does a lot of prep coaching during the week and makes overall adjustments during the game. He's always let his coordinators do the playcalling during the game

As expected the 2011 Big Ten Championship will be held at Lucas Oil Field in Indy.

Here's an article by Greenstein with quotes from Alvarez on the divisional talk:

The geographic layout with OSU, Michigan, PSU, MSU, Purdue, IU in the East and Nebraska, Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Northwestern, Illinois still makes the most sense. Covers your bases with geography and rivalries while keeping competitive balance.

It is and it's what I want to see, but I'd still hate to lose our protected rivalry with Purdue. West Lafayette makes for a nice and easy road trip.

he doesn't have much of an ego. he may not be a figurehead, as i said, but certainly most of the work at this point has to be delegated to other people. but here's the thing - the team is still doing well. they've been very good in conference and won some good bowl games. so i don't really see an urgency for him to go away, just because he's old.

plus the football team has massively increased the public profile of the school, and he's contributed millions to the school. after seeing the way that bowden was given the boot at FSU, i'm glad that penn state is letting paterno go when he wants. with everything he's done for the school, he's earned that much, unless he's basically senile and can't conduct a press conference or a practice.

I don't understand why people get all pissy about how Bowden was "given the boot" at FSU, like it was some travesty of injustice. That school should compete for national titles. Instead, they were struggling to even win the ACC. And they've slipped far behind Florida in national name and prestige. It was time for him to go.

USC FB Stanley Havili broke the cheek of CB TJ Bryant, who underwent surgery.

Don't worry, though. USC says it's all in the name of leadership.

The fight broke out near the end of a players-only workout last Friday, Trojans coach Lane Kiffin said. The players were finishing a relay drill when an argument escalated into a physical confrontation. Bryant, who was competing for a starting job this fall, is expected to miss three to four weeks. The Trojans open their season in Hawaii on Sept. 2.

.....

"It's very out of character. Sometimes, people show leadership in the wrong ways," Kiffin said. "This was a situation where Stanley tried to step in to get guys to finish without the coaches being there. He was showing leadership to get guys to finish at a level he's used to. My understanding is there was a back-and-forth and some pushing. Obviously, it didn't end well."
