Charlie Strong will be a candidate. This is according to a Florida Rivals writers Twitter.

The speculative list, as of right now...

Strong

Mullen

Whittingham

Stoops

Shanahan

Other names that are not even possibilities, but that you will hear:

Saban. No.

Petrino- seriously, why would Foley do that? That would be a worse hire than Zook.

Gruden.

There are apparently two possibilities:

Under a plan being discussed, Florida offensive coordinator Steve Adazzio would coach the Gators in the Sugar Bowl. Meyer, who cited health concerns as the reason for his retirement, would take a leave of absence and return to the team before the 2010 season.

Or:

However, a source close to the program told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that Meyer would take a leave of absence for the entirety of the 2010 season. Adazzio would take over as interim coach for the season.

Meyer has decided to take a leave of absence and return to the field next season:

"I do in my gut believe that will happen," he said Sunday at a Allstate Sugar Bowl news conference.

Offensive coordinator Steve Addazio will run the team during Meyer's absence, but Meyer will coach against Cincinnati on New Year's Day.

"It's full speed ahead. We're going to do everything possible to win this game," he said.

Meyer, 45, said he was offered and encouraged to take a leave of absence earlier in the week. He said being with his players at a "spirited practice" Sunday morning persuaded him not to resign.

"I've accepted this offer to improve my health," said Meyer, who refused to elaborate on his health problems and declined to answer when asked if doctors advised him to stop coaching.

So basically Urban Meyer is the Brett Favre of coaching. Now I remember why I dislike him so much.

right, except brett favre is old for his profession and retires every offseason, only to wait for another team to cater to his every desire and allow him to come back after skipping all of the hard work during the preseason, whereas urban meyer suffered a serious of significant health incidents that made him think he needed to retire - very early for his profession - but then reconsidered and a day later decided to take a leave of absence in hopes that he could improve his health in that way.

in other words it's pretty much exactly the same thing except in just about every way possible.

Are Urban's health issues really going to get any better by skipping out on a couple of months of recruiting? That's the open question I have here.

I don't see anything particularly unreasonable about that. Traveling around the country, scouting players, and selling them on your program vs. rest and close consultation with doctors is a fairly big difference. Where's the advantage to the Gators for him to do that?

From a pure football standpoint I don't see much to gain from him doing this so it seems incredibly stupid for someone to impugn him for taking some time off for a legit medical condition.

If Meyer had been running a middling SEC program for the last few years no one would any where would have a problem with it.

Last evening you thought your health issues were so serious that you had to resign from your position. Then some people talk to you, your team has a "spirited practice" and suddenly you're good to go next summer? WTF?

Not gonna lie, I LOL'ed really hard at that one.

Also, if I hear about Tebow calling Meyer dad one more time, yahmo shoot myself.

traveling around the country? I'm not sure Meyer travels further than Georgia to recruit, and even then maybe once or at most twice, during that time.

Why in the world would you announce your retirement before a BCS bowl and then, 24 hours later, hold a PC to say that you're not retiring and that your "leave of absence" is only going to last until fall camp? Oh, that's right b/c you lost the SEC title so you need the spotlight on your University. And you know that by making a spectacle of it, ESPN will run your PC uninterrupted giving you a national podium from which to declare how much you love your players and school such that you'd risk your health, even after your children just a day earlier praised you for quitting and told you "I get my daddy back."

It's all a hoax. The sympathy I had for Meyer yesterday is gone.

so, let me see if I can break this down into one off-the-cuff statement: he retired and then unretired. What famous NFL QB that ESPN loves has done that recently...let them think...it's right on the tip of my tongue...

Bob Stoops is an obvious fit - he was D-coordinator at UF before coaching Oklahoma, and he flirted with ND so he's clearly open to leaving. And UF is probably a better job.

yeah, probably. lol.

you two quit being bitter than meyer decided he'd rather win the nat'l title in the florida sunshine than lose to navy in cold, boring indiana.

Here's an interesting story behind Meyer's decision making process.

On Sunday, he called Jeremy Foley and then (his wife) Shelley from the practice field.

"He told me, 'I think I'll take a leave of absence,' " she said. "After all he had built in five years, he didn't want it to be handed off without at least trying a leave."

There are no guarantees the Sugar Bowl will be his last game as a coach, no guarantees he'll come back in 2010.

Foley and UF president Bernie Machen had pushed Meyer to take the leave of absence

Bitter? I hate a lot of people who haven't spurned me or my favorite CFB team. There's not enough bitter in the world for all of my wrath.

"cold, boring Indiana" - I spent over 20 years in Iowa. I love the place, but come on. little pot/kettle, isn't it?

He can get in some quality time with Tebow. Tebow cures all.
