but there isn't much difference. There were 5 conferences, but not all created equally. The Pac-10 was driven mostly by 1 school. Texas rules the Big 12. Then there's the SEC and the Big Ten. The major players are still the same. And several of the biggest players want to play against ND. It makes no sense.

I don't think that's a determination that can be made at this point. The difference could very well be significant, particularly if the new alignments bring two or more divisions closer together on their outlook of the future of the BCS. I don't think it's a linear effect.

divisions? I don't think I follow. The major players don't change and ND, like it or not, is a major player.

I meant conferences.

There potential difference comes from having the major conferences now aligned in their goals. There's a greater chance that they'll be able to come to agreement on the future of the BCS and not have to fight as hard to protect their own interests. The players are the same, but the simple reduction in number of conferences means there's potentially less fighting and more back-scratching.

maybe, but how much power do the weaker conferences have anyway? I just don't think the landscape has changed. The major powers are mostly the same (maybe add Florida and take away GA or some other SEC school) and they've shown a desire to continue playing ball with ND. There's just nothing to this that suggests to me that ND can't remain independent. They may not, but I think they can do so successfully and hope that's how it ends up.

I think ND can easily sit this one out. If a couple of years down the road it become obvious that they need to join a conference, I am sure a major conference will find room for them. Its not like the Big Ten will not take them because they didnt join now.

I don't think anyone has any idea what's going on and they're just throwing crap out there to see what sticks. Of course, that's just journalism nowadays, so nothing new.

Chip Brown just now:

Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech appear to be in lock step to the Pac-10 but will wait til next week to announce anything.

There is no truth to reports that Texas and Texas A&M are considering the Big Ten. But A&M is still considering the SEC.

Purple Book Cat:

Wow. Update.

Big Ten targeting only Texas and ND as of this afternoon, pending the outcome of A&M's status with the SEC.

Even though I like Matter, I have a hard time believing anyone at this point. I'll believe things when they happen.

They want the NY/NJ market, the largest in the country. How is that dumb?

Not so sure its the largest college football market in the world though. You could argue UConn is a better pick than Rutgers.

I'd like the Big Ten to break into the Los Angeles market. So how about Loyola Marymount?

Don't respond again until you read the previous 20 pages.

Not really. There are no UConn fans. Rutgers isn't huge, but it's bigger.

10 years ago they were 1-AA in football, and have made huge progress over that time. From an Athletic Department standpoint I would take UConn and think they will be consistently better than Rutgers in football over the next decade. Rutgers has a bigger student base though.
