but there isn't much difference. There were 5 conferences, but not all created equally. The Pac-10 was driven mostly by 1 school. Texas rules the Big 12. Then there's the SEC and the Big Ten. I don't think that's a determination that can be made at this point. The difference could very well be significant, particularly if the new alignments bring two or more divisions closer together on their outlook of the future of the BCS. I don't think it's a linear effect.

kctv5.com[/url]"]KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- High level sources in multiple conferences have told KCTV5 that Texas and Texas A&M are looking to move to the Big Ten Conference and have petitioned for membership, while the University of Oklahoma is planning on petitioning the Southeastern Conference to become a member of its conference.

KCTV5's sources said that Texas and Texas A&M do not have to include Texas Tech or Baylor in their plans. Sources told KCTV5 that there have already been discussions about the two schools entering the Big Ten and that the agreement could be made as soon as Thursday.

Oklahoma is currently working on petitioning to enter the SEC, but must find another university to enter the league with them, sources said. TMZ Sports has reported that Oklahoma State is likely to accept a bid to move to the Pac-10. Earlier Thursday, Colorado accepted an invitation to join the Pac-10.

KCTV5's sources also said that some Big 12 officials are saying decisions on which deals Big 12 schools take invitations by the end of the day Thursday, although the deals may not be officially announced. Big 12 officials also tell KCTV5's sources that some Big 12 office employees are planning to be without a job within weeks.

Those decisions would leave the University of Kansas, Kansas State University and the University of Missouri with Baylor, Texas Tech and Iowa State in the Big 12. The Missouri Board of Curators met Thursday and planned to meet Friday to discuss the future of Missouri sports.

So, they are either going to the Big Ten, the Pac 10, the SEC, or staying where they are and trying to hold the Big XII together. Got it.

If the Pac-10 ends up with Colorado and Oklahoma State at the end of this, it'll be a little funny.

It'd be a cold day in hell before I believed anything KCTV5 said.

Could their sources have been the dude on the NW board? Didn't he put on there last night that Texas and TAMU were coming to the Big Ten?

BTW, not saying any of this is accurate or that I believe a word, just making a completely arbitrary connection of two (probably) completely unrelated events.

If that happens, the remaining Big 12 could merge with the MWC and add Boise State and actually not be terrible. They wouldn't get any revenue through TV, but could be competitive as a 16 team league.

East: Mizzou, Iowa State, Kansas, K-State, Baylor, TCU, Colorado State, Air Force

West: Texas Tech, Boise State, Utah, BYU, UNLV, San Diego State, New Mexico, Wyoming

actually, the big ten tv revenue is not well reported. if you can find it broken down, i'd love to see it. I see a lot of reports that combine a bunch of revenue together, but not a true tv revenue breakdown.

i still don't understand why ND has any less control over its destiny now than it did yesterday or last year. it's an NCAA cash cow. you think no conference team is going to want ND and its hoards of fans and money on their schedule? the super conferences are going to exclude ND and the rest of the ncaa from their title game?

how do you get to 4 superconferences of 64 teams anyway? who makes up the 4th behemoth?

Simply because Notre Dame can't carry as much weight against fewer larger conferences as they did against more smaller conferences. Each superconference as more consolidated power than before.

Again, it's not about them being locked out completely. It's about having to settle on more limitations and a smaller piece of the pie because the conferences just don't have to budge the way they had to before.

The likeliest candidate is a new ACC with added schools from the Big East. But the situation on the east coast will probably develop last. The longer that plays out and the longer Notre Dame holds out, the less bargaining power they'll have if they decide to negotiate with the Big Ten.

but there isn't much difference. There were 5 conferences, but not all created equally. The Pac-10 was driven mostly by 1 school. Texas rules the Big 12. Then there's the SEC and the Big Ten. Agreed.

Real quick though, since you're kind of an impartial observer to the big 12 breakup/merge into the big 10... in your opinion, would adding texas make more sense than adding iowa state?

Not sure why ISU hasn't floated the idea of partnering with ND to start their own conference. Add KSU, KU, maybe the Chiefs. You've got yourself a stew going.

Since I grew up both an Irish fan and a Hawkeye fan, I'm against anything Iowa State. So I'm not really impartial here.

divisions? I don't think I follow. The major players don't change and ND, like it or not, is a major player.

I don't know who Kent Sterling is, but I like his name:

College Station, Texas, based sources close to Texas A&M confirm the scenario of Texas A&M, Texas and Nebraska joining the Big 10, bringing the total to 14.

..........

Sources also confirmed the rift with Texas Tech and Baylor is that “UT and A&M have joined together in this decision”. By adding this trio, UT does not “go to war alone in a new conference” when ongoing issues arise. This scenario also appeases the Texas legislators seeking to avoid any role in any decision (unless its popular and they can later take credit for it). It ensures there will be Texas based programming each weekend, and “Texas based Big Ten football in Texas every Saturday” in the fall, a key element to the negotiations. No empty Saturdays for the State of Texas, or the Big Ten Network.

So it appears Texas is covered.

...........

Now looking to the east, the source confirms a combination of Notre Dame, Syracuse and Rutgers will join in the next phase, bring the mega conference to 16. This secures the New York/New Jersey megamarket. Notre Dame says no more than 14. but does the Leprechaun have any clothes at this point?

Could Notre Dame be left out?

Jack Swarbrick, The eyes of Texas are upon you.

I'm getting pretty damn excited right now.

I doubt anything has been informally agreed upon since I'd assume the negotiations are pretty tense and could tip things one way or the other at any moment.

And what's so entertaining is that everything is unfolding right now. It's all reaction without much time to deliberate.

That would be a pretty swift kick in the balls for the Pac 10 with USC now neutered. I guess OU is still nice.

Rutgers going to the Big Ten still makes me laugh.

I think it's completely absurd but would be enjoyable for me from a personal standpoint.

Outside of being able to combine a trip up to see the in-laws with catching a Purdue game at Rutgers, I have no interest in seeing Rutgers join the conference.

my favorite thing about this expansion is that either way, OU fans are going to have to do a total 180

they always complain about 2 things, the self-congratulation amongst SEC fans (SEC SEC SEC chants at games) and that the Pac-10 sucks and all their teams play weak schedules, etc etc

now we're either going to the PAC-10 which will essentially be the little brother to the SEC and Big 10 2.0, or we're going to the SEC, and our fans will immediately start crowing "SEC IS THE BEST, A-NO. 1, KING OF NEW YORK."

I meant conferences.

There potential difference comes from having the major conferences now aligned in their goals. There's a greater chance that they'll be able to come to agreement on the future of the BCS and not have to fight as hard to protect their own interests. The players are the same, but the simple reduction in number of conferences means there's potentially less fighting and more back-scratching.

Texas has been playing ball with the Big Ten all along (or for at least as long as I have been privy and well before that. The story is absolutely fascinating). The worry is that they now backstab the Big Ten for some reason to the Pac-10.

If A&M ends up in the SEC, it is the original dream scenario they have planned for: Texas, Nebraska, and ND to the Big Ten.

The question surrounded whether A&M could split up with Texas and go somewhere else. Some sort of contingent offer has been given to Missouri. The Big Ten may end up with 15, though it prefers 14.
