p.s. if alabama had been the undefeated team in the SEC that got left out of the "championship game" instead of auburn in 2004-05, does anyone think that redflash would support the current system? yeah, didn't think so.

That's right, BCS conferences plead for schools like Utah and Boise State to join their conference, but they stubbornly refuse and beg for a playoff instead.

W/E. All I know this constant complaining and whinning about the lack of a playoff system is beyong annoying. Until the viewership drops, and the BCS/NCAA, etc, etc,etc begins to lose money, then the playoff system will never be given anything more then a token topic to talk about it. And I am fine with it. So all this debate is pretty much moot.

OK...just scrap the whole thing then. Go back to what they did before the BCS. Honestly, I think that would be better than what they do now. The NCAA should not endorse a system that gives someone a "National Title" and then not have in place a system that is equal and fair to everyone. The only equal and fair solution would be a playoff.

Television dollars would never allow it (competing for eyes on New Year's), but I would completely be in favor of going back to the old system if a 4-team playoff were truly never going to be an option. I can only imagine how cool it was when basically all the big bowls were on New Year's Day. There still wouldn't be a clear answer, but at least it would be fun. The only thing that I'd change in that scenario would be the once-common practice of teams accepting major bowl bids well before the season ends, which led to more than one bowl matchup that was intriguing at the time but looked a lot different after one of the teams went belly up at the end of the season.

So is ND persuing Edsell to drive down the cost of Kelly or is this legit? I think Edsell would be a solid hire, not sure that is what the ND faithful are looking for though.

Cincinnati has abruptly closed off their banquet to the media amidst reports that Kelly has called a closed-door meeting with his team before the banquet.

Edsall may or may not be a good coach if he were hired - he certainly has good qualities - but the fact of the matter is that he's .500 in his coaching career, which is a pretty glaring number at a school whose athletic director claims to be aiming to compete at the highest level. I doubt he's a serious candidate.

You know me......NOT. I cannot stand Auburn, but even I knew Auburn got screwed in that season. And yes I supported the system then. The ONLY time that I did not support the system was 2001 when Nebraska having NOT played in the Big 12 Championship was selected to face Miami for MNC and lost 37-17. I felt then and still do today that Oregon and NOT Nebraska should have been in the game.

But that's okay you can keep trying to think you know me.

South Bend Tribune just Tweeted that it's Brian Kelly.

Honestly it is probably the best ND could do.

With the apparent failure of the Stoops talks and the obvious lack of interest from Meyer or any of the other biggies, I have a hard time disagreeing.

He won't coach the bowl game, so it's right to work for Kelly. I hope for big things.

In a great shocker, Brian Kelly would not confirm to Chris Fowler during the ESPNU College Football Awards show that he was, in fact, going to ND.

Just thought I'd pass that along.

The news here said he would not coach the Sugar Bowl, i'm not a fan of that but goes along with a hire in this time of the month.

Yeah, I'd say ND was pretty insistent that whoever they hire come aboard immediately.

It's unfortunate for Cincy, to say the least, but it's an absolute necessity. You simply can't go 6 weeks in December and January without a coach and hope to retain any of your recruits. He needs to spend that time getting his staff together and then visiting as many of those wavering recruits (whether currently committed or not) as he possibly can.

I still feel bad for those Cincy players. This system does suck.

It's a product of the 12 month recruiting cycle that CFB has evolved into. A simple solution would be for the NCAA to implement a hiring/recruiting freeze from the end of the regular season to the end of the bowl season, but that would make too much sense.

Have both Clausen and Tate hired agents, I guess I am asking are they gone for sure or could Kelly still talk them into staying?

another reason the bowl system/bcs sucks.

How so?

for one, the absolutely pointless 6 week or whatever gap between a team's last game and its bowl means the bowls are played in january, meaning a team that has fired its coach cannot wait until after bowl season to hire its coach, meaning teams playing in bowl games are likely to have their coach poached.

secondly, it just goes to show how meaningless every bowl outside the championship is if a guy is willing to walk away from a chance at an undefeated season at the sugar bowl to take another job. he wouldn't walk away from cincy if his team was involved in a playoff with a shot to win a nat'l title.

This still wouldn't keep current players from deciding to transfer/leave early or current recruits from de-committing during that time. I imagine that's a big part of what Kelly will be dealing with immediately.

Yes, being able to get milllions of dollars somewhere else equates to meaningless.

There's a handful of coaching changes where this becomes a factor every year, it's really not a big deal, and how would this change at all if there was a playoff? The last games of the year are going to be played in January regardless, and regular seasons are going to end in the beginning of December, regardless.
