Who says Silva is in the rotation though, I doubt Piniella keeps in the rotation unless he beats out everyone else. Though you're right on who they spend it on.

Common sense says Silva is in the rotation.

How do you figure? Common sense says anybody with Silva's stats doesn't immediately get a spot in the rotation. No way Piniella is that dumb to give him a spot without battling for one.

When the competition is Tom Gorzelanny, Sean Marshall, and Jeff Samardzija versus a huge contract, it's common sense. Really. There's not going to be a real competition.

not to mention, Lilly's out until May at least so he's only going to be battling against Gorz and Shark unless Hendry signs another SP.

The idea that we had no choice but to trade him is patently stupid.

Ok genius, so what do you do other than this trade since you seem to know what options were out there. If you release him, you dont get the 6 million that you just saved. And again, not sure how anyone can assume he'll be in the rotation, especially coming off injury and with those numbers.

Well, I am a genius, thank you. The option is to... keep him!

And yes, Silva will be in the rotation.

I wouldn't just assume that.

EDIT - Forgot about Lilly's injury... he's almost a lock to get at least a few starts :(

When the competition is a long time prospect in Marshall who has shown he can start and another prospect who you've claimed to be a starter for a while now, no its not common sense.

Of course the best option is to keep him and i've said all along thats what the cubs should probably do, but with the way they have gone out in the media, it was apparent that that was never an option in Hendry mind.

Please, please, please give Silva #21. Sosa to Marquis to Bradley to Silva.

Awesome!

Wait, who have I claimed to be a starter again?

With Lilly hurt - it's common sense.

That does not matter. In Hendry's mind Silva was a reasonable acquisition. The best option was to keep him, regardless of whether or not Hendry considered it.

Awesome!

After that, the only logical next step would be to bring Aaron Miles back in 2 years and award him the cherished # 21.

This is dumb even for the Cubs.

At least we'll have a fun GM search next offseason.

Hendry should have been gone a long time ago, far before he ever had the chance to do the incredible amount of damage that he's done. That should have been the #1 thing that Ricketts did once he officially took control of the team. I mean immediately, as in "Congrats, Mr. Ricketts. You now officially own the Chicago Cubs."

"Great! (dials phone) Hey, Jim? You're fired."

No. 21 is like the Cubs' version of the "Defense Against the Dark Arts" teaching position.

Meanwhile, Lookout Landing is ecstatic about this trade.

It is funny to see them say things like "We can fix him" and "We have a tight knit clubhouse that can handle a malcontent". Soon it will be "He's saying all the right things, I think he really wants to fit in here"

Watch us have a good season (which is still pretty possible with likely rebounds from last year and the strength of the division, etc) and be stuck with him for another several years.

I'm honestly not sure what to root for next season.

No we will not. Chances are the Cubs will land a Ed Wade esque caliber GM, or best yet someone like Brian Sabean.

Agreed. I'd be thrilled.

I don't think Silva sees the rotation at all once Lilly is back and with Wells, Gorz, and Marshall, it's possible he doesn't see it even while he's out.

That is, of course, as long as we don't have to use Marshall as a loogy. ](*,)

since he signed with the mariners:

5-18, 6.81 ERA, 1.617 WHIP

254 hits, 139 ER in 183 2/3 innings

i just puked.

In one of the better pitching parks to boot.
