At least we won't lose a draft pick when we sign Figgins to 5/70

Yeah, but we won't gain a draft pick when the Cards or Brewers sign Rich Harden to reasonable 2yr deal.

I suppose that's possible assuming we do not offer arbitration - I'd have to think the Cubs would offer both Grabow and Harden. I can't seem to think of a scenario they would want to offer Gregg for the fear he might accept and we'd have to pay him quite a bit next year. There can't be that many teams out there that would be willing to offer a multi year deal for a middle tier (at best) closer.

The Cubs are too afraid to offer arbitration.

There's something fishy about that... It says Rich Harden has a higher score than Josh Johnson. But Johnson is listed as an A and Harden a B.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out Harden is an A.

Elias Rankings have been released.

Figgins is a TYPE A not B like projected.

Harden is a Type B

Gregg is a Type A

Grabow is also a Type A. :-s

Reed Johnson is unranked.

List

We should just offer arbitration to Grabow then, instead of signing him to a 2-3 year deal. Once teams see that they have to give up a first rounder to sign him they will back off and he won't have much of a choice other than to accept arby/go to a hearing and come back for a year.

The Cubs have to offer Arbitration to Harden now, right? They can't seriously believe that no one will sign him as a B free agent, can they?

I think it was assumed he would be an "A" right from the start. However, the reason they have discussed not offering arby is the team is cash strapped and can't afford for Harden to accept arbitration. He's not very likely to get more than a year from any teams out there and very few can actually afford to offer someone with health risks, like Harden has, more than 10m, which is what Harden has a good chance of earning by winning his arbitration case.

However, because he's a "B", it's more likely that teams will actually try to lock him up before the arby deadline, because teams don't actually lose anything by signing "B" picks early. So, in essence, the Cubs can basically get compensation by not doing anything because it's quite possible Harden will sign with someone else before the arby deadline expires.
