Sox claim Rios? Guess Dye won't be back.

No, Thome won't be back. I bet they re-sign Dye as the DH next year.

They should sign Bonds as the DH.

Alex Rios might be the most overrated player in baseball. Even when he's good, he's not that good.

screw you wilken

An .850 OPS and plus defense isn't too shabby.

I meant that as in "he's not THAT good". An .850 OPS is good, but nothing special (when he seems to have a reputation of being some stud hitter)... especially for a corner outfielder.

I don't know how they do it, but the White Sox are the average fan's dream type team. The type of fan that is always clammoring for their team to be involved with every available player. Peavy is available, they get him, Rios somehow is the mystery team that got to claim him. I'm not saying they are doing anything special that we aren't doing, but they just end up at the right place at the right time a lot.

I'm kinda starting to see the strategy Kenny Williams uses and I seem to like it. Every offseason they sell off parts and I think that they have regressed significantly, and then midseason rolls around and they are contending just enough to make a few big moves and become legit. Williams is either one of the smarter GMs in the game or one of the luckiest.

I go with one of the luckiest. Of course it doesn't hurt to be in the AL Central. The NL Central gets a lot of verbal abuse, but the AL Central has proven to be pretty bad too.

Does anyone think that there will be an actual trade and the Sox get him ?

Just curious since Rios is signed through 2014 or something like that.

If the Blue Jays aren't idiots, they will simply let the White Sox (assuming that's who claimed him) have him. Now that they've made a waiver claim, they are stuck with him and his awful contract if the Blue Jays say "ok."

Calling Rios an .850 OPS guy is mighty generous. He's hit that twice in 6 seasons (06 and 07). The other four, he's been .720, .702, .798, and this year .734.

The average fan wants to root for a bunch of pricks?

Rios is one of those players you just figure should be better than he is. He's got a ton of tools but, to this point, hasn't been able to harness them. You see the flashes and salivate at what just might be...and then...poof. Here in Toronto he gets ripped for not being focused and for a widely variable intensity level. i.e alot of times he seems just to be going through the motions.

Now I certainly don't know if that's actually the case, only a very few could, but I can certainly see where appearances could lead you to that conclusion.

He seems to me to be somone that has enough talent that he can get by (again at least so far) but for whatever reason he hasn't been able to put it together for a full season.

He might just not be a "baseball player"...ducks and runs for cover.

Seriously though he reminds me a little of DLee who never put it all together until that second season with the Cubs. He had flashes, and certainly had some decent seaons but you always figured that more was possible.

White Sox just got Alex Rios for nothing.

No. Not nothing. $60+ million.

Kenny Williams strikes again?

White Sox trying to catch up to the Cubs in bad contracts?

They've added $116 million in contract value for two players (Peavy and Rios) since the trade deadline.

Wow, 6 years and 60 million dollars remaining on his contract. He has a .317 OBP and a .744 OPS this year. He's been better in the past but I really don't like this move for the Sox. Of course, Kenny Williams will be hailed for such a "balls out" move by the slobbering Chicago media, even though he's locked up at least 116 million dollars in 2 questionable moves.

This move has to have been Williams getting caught blocking Rios from Detroit. I don't know but i don't see why else he would put a claim on a player with a 60 million buck contract.

You can't argue with Peavy ... he's proven. Rios is definitely a risky move, IMO. I'm surprised the posters on WSI and Soxtalk aren't talking more about the risk. They are almost universally hailing Kenny for this.

They're still caught up with the Peavy move. I don't think they are going to talk about the risks and/or start bashing Wiliams for some time or if Rios really sucks.

Wow, the White Sox picked up a younger yet worse version of Alfonso Soriano. Rios is a career .786 OPS OF, whereas Soriano is a career .840. If the Cubs fans are rough on Soriano, then the White Sox are going to kill Rios.
