Since Ryan is on contract through 2010(wow, Jays still on the hook for 15 mil) does that mean any team who picks him up pays prorated league min this year and full league min next year, or how does that work? Either way, its a low risk move.

I support this move, especially since it looks like Patton's injury might keep him out all year. I heard his prognosis is a severely crunched roster.

LOL... Lou would use him as a loogy

RHB against in his career: .236/.327/.343/.670

LHB against in his career: .179/.285/.273/.558

What's wrong with using him as a loogy?

Go sign the guy for the league minimum. Maybe a switch to the NL will do him some good. It's worth a shot.

I wouldn't be against it. Can't be worse than Cotts was.

I was mostly taking a jab at Lou's use of Marshall; obviously, I didn't bother to look at Ryan's splits. And the difference in Ryan's numbers don't scream "use only vs. lefties"; not enough of a differential, IMO.--

Carlos Marmol career according to http://www.sportingnews.com/mlb/player_splits?player_id=7789:

vs righties: .172/.293/.273/.566

vs lefties: .204/.332/.407/.739

I'd say there's just as much of an argument that Marmol should only face righties as saying that Ryan should be a a loogy....and I don't see many people saying that.

It should also be noted that Ryan has improved three straight months:

April: 11.12 ERA, 2.50 WHIP, .364 BAA

May: 6.35 ERA, 2.12 WHIP, .318 BAA

June: 1.04 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, .207 BAA

Go sign him right now. Seriously, Jim Hendry, go do it.

At least invite him over to throw for you or offer him a minor league deal.

I agree that Ryan at his best should be a closer and not a loogy. But, if we were to sign him now, it'd probably be best to use him as a loogy to put him in the best situations to recover his confidence in his stuff and give him the best chance to succeed.

The June numbers look a lot better, but he still walked 6 and struck out only 3. I want to see that ratio improve.

I wouldn't be against signing him and giving him a chance, though.

Depending on how sharp his slider is, he probably isn't any different than most AAAA lefties wondering around.

Name matters little after you have gone thru what he has gone thru and putting up those velo reports.

Yeah, the likelihood of him still being effective is low, but a league minimum deal without giving up prospects couldn't hurt. Give him some time in the minors and see if he can work things out a bit.

I agree. If something can get done quickly, maybe they can stretch Marshall out to start in Dempster's absence after the break and then when Harden continues to suck or inevitably gets injured again.

Yeah, the WHIP is still too high, but I wouldn't worry too much. He's brought it down significantly 3 months in a row... so I would have confidence that it'll be lower this/next month.

If anything, improving it three straight months makes it more likely he'll regress, not continue to improve.

Cubs Interested In B.J. Ryan

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 12 at 9:46pm CST]

Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports that the Cubs have interest in the recently-released B.J. Ryan. The former Blue Jays closer will become a free agent when he clears waivers tomorrow, so any team will be able to pick him up for the major league minimum. The Blue Jays will pay the rest of Ryan's contract, some $15MM over the next year and a half.

The Cubs could send Ryan to the minors if they sign him, then bring him up as a lefty specialist if they believe he can be effective in the majors again.

Any chance BJ played second base at any point in his college, high school or little league career?

it's not hard to improve when you're that bad.
