lol. Isolated incident my arse.

When one knows they may be tested at the WBC, and they still fail the test, then that is likely associated with use that is at least somewhat habitual. Someone who doesn't really smoke (or smoke anymore) may smoke every once in a blue moon to celebrate something perhaps, but they probably wouldn't do it close to the time period in which they may be tested. If it were a one time occurence as he suggests, even being a tad portly, it likely would have been out of his system in about 7 days.

If he's getting loaded (via marijuana, alcohol, whatever) everyday, then it would have a negative impact on his physical ability and reactionary time. I don't know how often he smokes or smoked, so I'm not going to assume he has negatively impacted his ability to play baseball. However, I do call BS on the "isolated incident" assertion.

Marijuana? That's nothing.

Soto plays for the Chicago Cubs.

I admire him for not mainlining heroin.

Why are we talking about the legality of pot? That has nothing to do with this.

How can anyone debate smoking weed is unhealthy? Smoking ANYTHING is unhealthy for your circulatory and respiration systems. This guys a pro ball player. Come on.

And to whoever said "dont watch sports" if we don't agree with stuff, well, thats ridiculous. I could in turn say "well, dont PLAY sports" if you're going to be irresponsible about it.

by that standard, pro athletes should also not drink alcohol (except for a glass of wine a day) or eat fatty foods.

That's between them and their employers. Nothing to do with us.

If you want to be bothered, prepare to be bothered a *lot*. Athletes do a lot of stuff.

I know it's obviously not possible, but no, they shouldn't. And some don't!

I'm not bothered by it on a personal level. He can do whatever the hell he wants, and I won't judge him. I don't care. What I do care about though, is that when you're a pro athlete, you're representing the Cubs, you're representing all of us, not just yourself. I care about that. It's the same logic as being caught doing anything else illegal, people just get all emotional about it because of the debate about the legality of pot, specifically. Point is, it's unhealthy and illegal, and he's being paid (by us) to perform, and that inhibits performance. Not cool. What if he got pulled over with pot in his vehicle and got suspended from the team? Would you care then?

no, hes representing the baseball team. he is not representing you.

Like I said, he was coming off the off season, spending it wherever he lives. It could be legal there, and the Cubs said they have tested him regularly since and he hasnt failed a test. I wouldnt be at all surprised that he smokes it in the off season, and then doesnt while the season is going on. I also wouldnt be surprised if he smokes it all the time, and again who cares.

It's just not worth getting caught when you're a pro baseball player. Get your priorities in order, in my opinion. It's not like your life is terrible and depressing and you live in soviet russia if you can't smoke a blunt. Get over it. You have responsibilities.

He's not being paid by us.

Then who else buys the tickets and merchandise?

We buy tickets and merchandise from the team. We lose all claims to the money and all responsibility for how it is spent the moment that transaction is finalized.

Obviously he has his priorities in order if he hasnt failed a drug test since. But hell after last years post season can you blame Geo for wanting to smoke a little weed during the offseason? Also, for the people claiming Geo is fat compared to last year, he really isnt. Last week in the rain delay when they were showing the game against Milw, Outshined One and myself said the exact same thing..."Damn, Geo was actually fat last year too."

i actually like geo even more now.

If he really only does it a few times a year, then I'm fine with it. If he's a habitual user, and it's impacting his performance on the field, then I'm pissed off. However, I'll probably never know for sure. It's pretty easy to obtain a prosthesis, obtain clean/dried urine, add distillled water to the dried urine, place this mixture in an IV bag, warm the IV bag with 'hot hands', attach the IV to the prosthesis running a tube out of it, and pass a test even if you're puffing down everyday.

Well it is illegal, so I'm not too happy about it. And it was in the middle of the WBC when he should be getting ready for the season. It's not like it was in November or something. Just shows poor judgment from one of the young (supposed) superstars of this franchise.

Its hard telling when Geo smoked it for one, and for 2, where does Geo spend his offseason? It could be legal there. Lastly, who cares.

Yeah. Why would we be upset that he was smoking weed and devouring cases of Cheetos instead of preparing for the season? He's playing just fine, right?

He's actually playing very well lately.

You really think pot = baseball decline?

Everyone's been crying about how fat he is this year, right? It's not a stretch to think that his weight issues could be related to smoking weed.

I'm inclined more to think it has to do with him always being big.

Probably because he's always smoked pot. Duhhhh.

Really though, that's one of the most ludicrous things I've ever heard. I know lots and lots of skinny people who smoke pot. Just like I know some fat people. Pot =/= weight problem.

Soto's been fine since roughly May 1st.

Inconsistent play in the WBC and being horribly out of shape basically left him a month late to add any value to the team.

I think he'll be prepared from day one next season.

Geo only smoked pot once and Sammy only used a corked bat once.

Just because there's a rule against corked bats doesn't mean corked bats increase performance. MLB commissioned a physics study many years ago that shows that, if anything, corked bats actually decrease distance of batted balls. Corked bats are as performance-enhancing as pine tar.

Just because pot's illegal doesn't mean it's morally reprehensible. I don't smoke pot and never have, but it's pretty depressing to watch my government expend money and other resources in fighting a pointless war.

Have you ever swung at a fastball in the dirt?

Have you ever swung at a fast ball in the dirt...on weed?

Good one!

My heart skipped a beat when I read the headline "Geovany Soto test positive for.........

.........Oh God, this crappy season is about to get worse........

marijuana."

Oh. Well that's not so bad.
