Surprised so many people are fine with this.

I'm far more bothered by Aramis' cockfighting than Geo's ganja smoking. I'd be more upset if he got caught drunk driving. Players do things that are a lot worse than getting high occasionally.

Just kind of surprises me that nobody seems to care. Smoking weed isn't a big deal IMO. But I would be concerned if a player's numbers fell off the map and then tested positive for smoking up.

the guy is 26 years old. chances are he didn't just discover pot during the offseason.

True, but he can afford it now.

why wouldn't we be? it's weed. big deal. it's no worse than a player drinking

Except that they drug test for weed, duh. It's like, you know, illegal and stuff.

I don't think it's a big deal either, in the right context. Unfortunately for Geo, he's not in the same context as you or I. He's held to a higher standard, higher responsibilities, and he messed up. It kind of bothers me no one on this board seems to care.

it bothers me that you have your panties in a bunch over this.

There's nothing wrong with marijuana. Period. I think I like Geo even more now.

And was it announced before or after today's game? I would love to hear Len and Bob's reactions :-))

It bothers me how flippant you are about it. Bottom line is he did something illegal and you don't care. But it's pretty obvious from reading your posts on here that you don't really care about anything too much. Which is fine, but don't be so shocked when other people hold each other to higher standards. There has to be moral absolutes, especially in the professional world.

The funny thing about all this is I'm pretty confident that both you and I have smoked weed, or do smoke weed, or will smoke weed. But -- if I was a professional ball player, there's no way in hell I'd touch the stuff. I mean why risk it? Explain that to me.

The icing on the cake is if you asked Geo if it was a smart decision, and if he knew then what he does now (as far as it going public), I think we both know what his answer would be.

I didn't catch much of the TV broadcast, but there's no way in hell Len and/or Bob would go anywhere near this topic on a broadcast. Waaaaaaay too touchy.

it's illegal in the USA and most other countries, but not everywhere.

So if you want to make the legal argument stick, you'll have to find out just where he did his smoking.

Just out of curiosity, were any players from the Netherlands tested during the WBC?

BS. He's held to a LOWER standard. If I failed any kind of a drug test, I'd be fired, or worse, arrested. Athletes get away with worse things all the time. Don't confuse high publicity for high standards.

Baseball is pretty low on the "responsibility" scale too.

anyone here think Geo didn't smoke in the off season before his ROY 2008 season? i hope not, because that would be stupid.

Seriously, who holds professional athletes to higher standards? Donte Stallworth basically got away with killing someone. Most of them do a lot of stupid things. You really shouldn't expect much.

Marijuana is such a non story. There is discussion of actually legalizing it. All you have to to do to get a card to legally buy marijuana in the US is to walk into your doctors office and claim you have a head ache and the doc will write you up a prescription.

I've personally watched some people perform at their jobs with a much higher level of focus and production completely high on weed.

I applaud Geo for trying to stop the insanity of making it illegal to pick a weed up that you can actually grow in your back yard and smoke it. It doesn't get much more natural than that. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

It will still be illegal. It is classified at as Schedule I drug (the strictest classification) under the Controlled Substances Act, and will always be federally illegal until that is changed, regardless of what states do.

You need to put an asterisk next to your statement. It's only illegal as long as you don't have a card in your wallet that says you can legally buy it and smoke it.

And I've heard it is super easy to get a card if you really want one.

I don't know what Schedule I means, but it shouldn't be too hard to change it if it classifies marijuana with drugs like heroin, PCP, Crystal and other life threatening drugs. I'm still waiting to read the first obituary that reads "man dies from marijuana overdose".

Geo doesn't smoke pot, pot smokes him.

How is all this personal stuff getting out to the public?

The Netherlands did pretty good in the WBC this year, IIRC.
