Marijuana is such a non story. There is discussion of actually legalizing it. All you have to to do to get a card to legally buy marijuana in the US is to walk into your doctors office and claim you have a head ache and the doc will write you up a prescription.

It will still be illegal. It is classified at as Schedule I drug (the strictest classification) under the Controlled Substances Act, and will always be federally illegal until that is changed, regardless of what states do.

You need to put an asterisk next to your statement. It's only illegal as long as you don't have a card in your wallet that says you can legally buy it and smoke it.

And I've heard it is super easy to get a card if you really want one.

I don't know what Schedule I means, but it shouldn't be too hard to change it if it classifies marijuana with drugs like heroin, PCP, Crystal and other life threatening drugs. I'm still waiting to read the first obituary that reads "man dies from marijuana overdose".

The federal government still considers it illegal no matter what California or any other state does. Do a quick google search and you will see lots of "shops" in California that are selling pot legally by state standards that are being busted by the FDA, a federal agency. Even find a Drew Carey video of him supporting legalization and such.

Marijuana has been Schedule 1 for quite some time, and it's hard to change because of, in part, the videos the government put out about pot before my time. The main reason Obama and others in the government are considering legalization, or at least decriminalization, is because we are $982 TRABAZILLION in debt and need a way to increase tax revenue substantially. Legalizing weed is one very efficient way of doing that.

You won't read an obituary for someone dying of a pot overdose because, IIRC, you have to smoke your body weight in in given time frame to OD. Which, isn't physically possible.

With tax rates on cigarettes now so ridiculous, the government is probably going to start losing money on cigarettes, so they will need it somewhere else. If it's not going to be on something like marijuana, then it will end up being something that costs every taxpayer.

You guys are missing the point on this completely. You're turning it into an argument about the legality/morality of weed, when in reality, the issue here is Geo's apparent lack of responsibility as a young player. No one cares about that? Ok.

Not really. Again, it's pretty obvious he must have smoked in the offseason and had then gotten surprised by an early test for the WBC. A series that I wish did not happen and needlessly puts members of our team at risk of injury. The Cubs have stated he's been tested before during the season and did not fail. This screams "isolated incident because of the stupid WBC".

Surprised so many people are fine with this.

I'm not in the least. Public opinion on this issue has been moving towards at least decriminalization for years, and rapidly so of late. The last polls I saw had support for freaking legalization at over 40%. That's right at the level of gay marriage, which of course is expanding again and again on the state level.

Like most things in our culture, public perception is way ahead of actual change or the law

Marijuana? That's nothing.

Soto plays for the Chicago Cubs.

I admire him for not mainlining heroin.

Post of the year. And we're probably lucky that half the team isn't giving Anna Nicole Smith a run for her money...

You aren't getting it. The card is administered by your state. States can say it's okay. It doesn't matter. The Federal government still considers it illegal.

You could have a personally signed piece of parchment from the governor of your state, with permission to own as much cannabis as you want for whatever reason outlined in beautiful calligraphy.

It doesn't matter. It's illegal at the federal level.

Geo doesn't smoke pot, pot smokes him.

How is all this personal stuff getting out to the public?

Geo found out about the test in April. He's been wanting to make a statement about it since then to get it over with, but the Cubs wanted to wait for the IBF. The Cubs got tired of waiting, and decided to talk about it now.

It bothers me how flippant you are about it. Bottom line is he did something illegal and you don't care. But it's pretty obvious from reading your posts on here that you don't really care about anything too much.

that's untrue. i care about plenty of things; however, what a baseball player does at his home during the offseason is not one of them, especially if he's just getting high. i don't think it affects his performance and i don't consider smoking weed to be a big deal. i'd rather that a baseball player get high during the offseason than, say, go out drinking frequently during the regular season, which is something that a lot of ballplayers do.

The funny thing about all this is I'm pretty confident that both you and I have smoked weed, or do smoke weed, or will smoke weed.

well then your confidence is unwarranted, because i have never smoked weed in my life.

who cares? slavery used to be legal too, and it used to be illegal for blacks and women to vote. just because something is illegal or the government classifies it a certain way doesn't mean the government is right or knows what the hell it is doing.

Do I care that Soto did something illegal? No. But I think it's important to get the facts correct within the discussion.

I smoke my weed in this vaporizer thing that turns it into steam which supposedly does not hurt your lungs. But sometimes I just kill my lungs with the bong.

Sun Times or High Times?

I guess my point, more than anything else, is that with how this team is playing currently, the last thing we needed was a distraction. Oh well.

maybe it's good for the players to think about something other than how terribly they're playing.

From what Soto said, it sounds like this being a secret and hanging over him was more of a distraction, at least to him, if not the team. I imagine all of the players knew about this all season. It's just the public reaction that is new here.

It being in the open, and passing after a few days might be exactly what is needed to loosen him up.

With the way this team is playing maybe they should all go out and get high together and relax, maybe then theyd quit pressing so damn bad with RISP......

A professional athlete does pots??!! What a surprise!!! Geo clearly lacks judgement.

In related news, the grass is green. No pun nintendo*

You know, you're right...I don't think it could get any worse.

I didn't catch much of the TV broadcast, but there's no way in hell Len and/or Bob would go anywhere near this topic on a broadcast. Waaaaaaay too touchy.

I stand corrected.

Why are we talking about the legality of pot? That has nothing to do with this.

How can anyone debate smoking weed is unhealthy? Smoking ANYTHING is unhealthy for your circulatory and respiration systems. This guys a pro ball player. Come on.

And to whoever said "dont watch sports" if we don't agree with stuff, well, thats ridiculous. I could in turn say "well, dont PLAY sports" if you're going to be irresponsible about it.

Did he say he smoked it?

Just kind of surprises me that nobody seems to care. Smoking weed isn't a big deal IMO. But I would be concerned if a player's numbers fell off the map and then tested positive for smoking up.

the guy is 26 years old. chances are he didn't just discover pot during the offseason.

True, but he can afford it now.

..have you ever bought weed before?

lol @ len today during the game talking about how "it must feel like the weight of the world has been lifted off geo's shoulders". yeah len, i'm sure he was kept up at nights thinking about that night that he smoked that joint. it must have haunted him.

I think the implication was that Geo was informed that he had failed a test long before it was made public
