I personally don't care much for most sub places anymore, and I really don't care much for subs. But there was a deli where I used to live in New Jersey called Lenny's Meat Market. Used to pile on the meat and any kind of cheese or condiment. Prices were very reasonable and tasted excellent. As for the popular Subway: I need a microscope just to see the meat on their subs and theyve gotten way too expensive. Easily my least favorite place for subs and one of my least favorite places to eat period.

If you think Subway is too expensive you should see other sub places. The remaining $5 footlongs they have are one of the best deals in 'cheap' food. Guaranteed fill-up every time.

Filled up with a whole bunch of light airy bread and extremely low quality meat. If you just buy a $5 footlong, it's cheap, yes. But there aren't many $5 subs on the menu. My favorite deli where I live sells something called the Super Hero, with amazing hot ham, homemade mozzerella and, now I can't remember the 2nd meat. But anyway, it's a billion times better than anything you can get at Subway. And up until last year it was $5, now I think it's $5.50.

One of the joys of living on the east coast is the Deli. We don't have anything even remotely like that in the south, midwest, or west, with a few exceptions. In NY/NJ/CT/MA/PA every town has a deli that's way better than any chain store, especially if they carry Boars Head meats.

I can get Boars Head deli meats at 3 or more local supermarkets here in central IL ... there's also a local deli and a butcher shop in my little town of 16,000. The deli serves meats from Rocke's.

It's not the NYC-style, old-school deli that everyone thinks of, though. More "Midwest beef" than "Jewish nosh".

I am a manager at Jimmy John's. Good food, but after a few years it gets a little old. #10 with dijon and peppers for the win.

Anyways, right now, if I could choose a sub it would definitely be Potbelly's. I've only eaten there twice when I went off to training in Illinois, but I loved it. Too bad there aren't any in Kansas. :(

Every choice on this pole is not only a chain, but a major chain. Zero's is the only choice I expect wouldnt be to popular among people in the mid west. I see where I messed up. I assumed that all Cubs fans where in Chicago. How one could have the Dodgers and Angels and be a Cubs fan is beyond me. A little Cub/Card friendly humor there. :P I see that many of you live out west?? I wouldnt have expected that, and that is why these places are unknown to you.

38 stores for a sub store is not a major chain

I had Quiznos tonight for the first time ever. Absolutely disgusting. My stomach hates me now.

Don't be sad. If you want a delicious sub in Kansas you should just go to Mr. Goodcents. That would be my vote. The Penny Club with the stardard press, spicy mustard and mayo. You're set.

I'm intrigued. What meats are in the Penny Club and what's a standard press? I must investigate.

the prime rib cheesesteak at quiznos is truly a gift from the gods

Eww. Maybe it's awesome, but I have a problem with a cheesesteak in a place that's not known for cheesesteaks. But I guess I now have two sandwiches to try since they both are in Kansas.

Well, the Penny Club is a turkey, ham, and roast beef sub. There are different types of subs that go along with the change (Goodcents) theme. The typical standard press is lettuce, tomato, onion, oil and vinegar, salt and pepper and oregano. You can add on or subtract whatever you would like, but I like being able to say that I want the Penny with the Standard. One of the nice things about the place is that their meat is fresh (compared to your typical Subway or Quiznos type place), where the meat is just sitting out. When you order your sub, they freshly slice your meats and cheeses. They have kept up with the bigger chains by offering a $5 dollar footlong sub, but their typical sizes are 8 in. and 16 in. I've been going there for years and it is definitely my favorite sub place, for the food and value, around here.

I do like Penn Station a lot. Does anybody know of any good non chain sub places in the St. Louis area? For the most part, I have eaten at pretty much all chains since I've been here which is very disheartening. (The Hill not withstanding)

Central Grocery in New Orleans has a mean muffaletta sandwich..the key is the olive salad they make. In Mobile, I'm a fan of Lenny's sub shop. Their Italian sub is pretty good as they slice fresh capicola and prosciutto. Their Philly Cheesesteak is also good...they make a really good pepper relish they put on this...as close to the real thing as you can get on the gulf coast. Their bread isn't awesome, but it does the job. We have Jimmy John's down here, but I'm not impressed really.

There are a ton of places down here that specialize in Po'boys....fresh oyster po'boys are hard to beat.

I've never had one but that sounds extremely good.
