A team from Chicago is showing interest in trading four players for Jake Peavy – but for now, it's not the Cubs.

It's the White Sox.

According to Padres personnel, Peavy met with Padres manager Bud Black late Wednesday night to discuss a trade overture from the Sox.

Peavy, whose consent would be needed for a trade to any club, declined all comment after meeting with Black.

Within the clubhouse, though, Peavy referred to the situation as “something to think about” yet also restated his desire to stay in the National League. One of Peavy's teammates said he believes Peavy respects the Sox's aggressiveness in pushing for him but may have reservations about pitching for Ozzie Guillen, the White Sox's volatile manager.

Buster Olney also just mentioned it on ESPN and said he thinks it will probably get done.

I really cant see this deal happening without Gordon Beckham, Clayton Richard, and either Gavin Floyd or John Danks involved, especially after they wouldnt send him to Atlanta without getting one of the top 3 pitching prospects in the game. And it would also send the Hendry hate skyrocketing through the roof, but then again, it could be a blessing in disguise, as it could get us on track to trading for what we really need, and thats a 2B or 3B who can hit without worrying about giving up pieces for the Peavy deal.

With our offensive struggles, I'm willing to keep Vitters, Marshall, etc. and look for some offensive help. Starting pitching in 2010 looks to be okay with Marshall, Shark, Wells, and possibly Harden (re-signed) to fill 2 spots.

Peavy had said before he didn't want to play in the A.L. I guess we have to see if playing for a decent team instead of the Pads will override that.

If he really is willing to go to the NL, I have to believe that the Angels are going to jump back into the mix.

The White Sox are a decent team?

apparently jake doesn't care where he goes because the white sox are not doing anything this season, and they don't look set up well for the the next couple of seasons either

Yeah, especially if they have to give up a boatload of good young players. Konerko, Thome, Dye, and AJ aren't getting any younger.

I bet the Sox are just trying to get the pieces together to make a trade with the Cubs to re-acquire Cotts :)

Seriously I can't see why Peavy would want to go to the Sox as I was under the impression he wanted to play for a contender. Either way, the Cubs have bigger problems

Well, that came out of no where. Hopefully it doesn't go through and we swoop in.

Sox are offering Richard and Poreda. Pads want top pitching prospects and we dont have anything to match those 2. Its all in Peavys hands now.

However, hes in for a rude awakening next year why Dye, Konerko, and Thome are gone and hes essentially back on the Padres.

Yeah, this really doesn't make much sense. Sure, the White Sox get a Cy Young caliber pitcher, but several things seem off:

1. The White Sox are an average team this year, but attrition would take it's toll beyond this year as several of their veterans would more than likely leave (Dye, etc). The Sox as is are heading for a bit of rebuilding, but by trading top prospects for Peavy, they hurt their long term prognosis.

2. I thought the Sox were cutting payroll. Maybe it wouldn't be an issue down the line, but Peavy's contract isn't cheap.

3. Unless the deal sends Beckham and one of Floyd or Danks, I don't see how the Padres wouldn't just wait for a better offer. There would have to be, right?

4. Peavy to the Sox would be terrible for Peavy. He's still got that NTC, so couldn't he just hold out for a better team with a brighter potential this year and beyond (Cubs, Angels, etc).

For the record, I'm not really in the trade for Peavy camp. I won't complain if he comes, but he's a luxury when we clearly have other needs.

Except as of right now he hasn't approved the trade and that's supposedly what this is all hanging on.

From Buster's ESPN.com article:

One of Peavy's teammates said he believes Peavy respects the White Sox for pursuing a trade for him, but may have reservations about playing for White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen, according to the report.

The White Sox are no great shakes, but they are in a very winnable division and have a way better chance of getting to the playoffs than the Pads.

Oh, and forgot to mention this, but I feel like if Peavy were a 'rent a player', then the deal makes more sense. But I'm just confused as to why the Sox.

i could imagine the very bowels of hell opening and swallowing Hendry if the Brewers got both Peavy and Derosa Edited by chasinf5s

Peavy won't accept a trade to the White Sox.

If he does, I sure hope it's before Saturday.
