Can you appeal a positive test suspension or will he have to serve it right away? I wouldn't think you could appeal it since it's a pretty concrete rule.

Well, the Dodgers have already recalled Xavier Paul from AAA so I guess that isn't an option.

From the same Rosenthal article:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/baseball/mlb/05/07/manny/index.html?eref=T1

Ramirez ranks 17th on the all-time home run list with 533. Eight of those top 17 home run hitters played in what is commonly referred to as The Steroid Era. And six of those eight modern-day sluggers have been associated with performance-enhancing drugs: Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Mark McGwire, Rafael Palmeiro, Alex Rodriguez and Manny Ramirez. The only modern sluggers to have escaped such a connection are Ken Griffey Jr. and Jim Thome.

Sosa's inclusion in that list is just wrong. We can all presume what we want, but there's no actual evidence of anything with him...

Would this have been a recent drug test that he failed?

Apparently so. Sounds like it came from spring training but the LA Times guy wouldn't confirm this morning.

I see that in almost every steroid article and it just pisses me off. Pujols is not more associated with steroids than Sosa.

Scott Boras, Ramirez's agent, told ESPN's Peter Gammons that his client did not test positive for steroids, but for a drug that was prescribed by a doctor for a medical condition.

Two sources confirm for me that Ramirez did not test positive for an anabolic steroid. What the substance was remains unclear. The press release from MLB indicates that it was not a “drug of abuse” or a “stimulant,” the other two classes of banned substances. Ramirez’s positive test came during Spring Training, which follows his story that he received the substance from a doctor this January.

This, if true, changes the story a bit.

Just guessing, but judging by how long it took for the suspension to come down (if it was a spring training test), it's possible he already tried appealing it and failed. Didn't Raffy Palmeiro try to appeal his suspension before it was announced?

Didn't see that one coming...

Even if that's the case and it was prescribed by a doc, the guy has to be nuts in this day and age to take it without talking to the team doctor first or getting clearance from MLB. Maybe a couple of years ago you could see this mixup happening(JC Romero) but today there is no excuse for it.

I'm absolutely amazed at all of the prescription medicines with PE's as the secret ingredient.

Isnt a 50 game suspension from failing your 2nd test?

I think it used to be that way. When Palmero (sp?) was suspended he received a 10 game but I think it changed a year or two afterward and it was 50 games for the first positive test.

You would have to be an absolute idiot to take any medication from a private doctor without first clearing it through the team doctors and the league. MLB makes exceptions for prescribed medicines. There are several players who have exemptions for certain steroid use due to asthma.

I'm pretty sure the current one is 50/100/life

keener's probably thinking of the original steroid policy, which was:

1st offense: lose hot tub privileges

2nd offense: mean letter from commissioner's office

3rd offense: stern face to face talking-to by bud selig.

4th offense: 1 game suspension

5th offense: 2 game suspension

...

500th offense: permanent ban from baseball.

Wow. What a bombshell. The Dodgers are still pretty damn good even without Manny.

The Hall of Fame is going to be missing a lot of players who played from 1988-2005.

They might have to make a separate wing for them.

I always love when bad stuff happens to the Dodgers, 1) because they beat us last October, and 2) because I get to read the reactions of the Dodger Blues message board.

One of the posters is claiming it was a test that was failed last season, but I can't see that being true. If it was, I'd be pissed if he wasn't suspended come playoff time.

Edit: An example of the hilarity at DB.com:

this is the worst news i have ever woken up to, worst than 9/11

Dude. The party is only just getting started here in San Diego. They'll still finish in dead last place, but hey, Manny got suspended.

I don't believe that. There is a huge number of writers that will vote for Bonds as soon as they can and they'll justify it. Manny may be the same situation especially considering it's not a steroid (reportedly) he's been busted for.

The voters put in who they want to put in............whether it makes sense is another discussion all it's own.
