A source close to Manny Ramirez(notes) said Thursday that the illegal substance for which the Los Angeles Dodgers slugger tested positive was not “an agent customarily used for performance enhancing.”

At least not on the baseball diamond. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the substance is supposed to boost sex drive. It is not Viagra, but a substance that treats the cause rather providing a temporary boost in sexual performance, the source said.

Sounds like boner pills.

So, how many times will I immaturely laugh when an announcer accidentally says "he got good wood on that one" when ever Manny bats from now on.

Stimulants don't result in 50 game penalties. Here's the rules.

Banned PEDs -

1-52 are steroids or the like

53. Human Growth Hormone (“HGH”)

54. Insulin-like Growth Factor (IGF-1), including all isomers of IGF-1 sometimes referred to as Mechano Growth Factors

55. Gonadotrophins (including LH and hCG)

56. Aromatase Inhibitors, including Anastrazole, Lestrozole, Aminogluthemide, Exemestane, Formestane, and Testolactone

57. Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators, including Raloxifene, Tamoxifen and Toremifene

58. Other Anti-estrogens, including Clomiphene, Cyclophenil, and Fulvestrant

I can't think of any plausible medical reason for the use of 53-58 for a healthy athlete in his 30's. Those at the end are all testosterone related and may work with the 'male enhancement' side loosely. But then again, there is a reason these are banned.

You mean the pills that are actually pictured in the dictionary next to "Performance Enhancing Drugs"?

Manny being flaccid.

He was going through some stressful contract negotiations in January which may have effected his performance.

Between this and Brett Farve, my guess is ESPN will be unwatchable for at least a week.

ESPN just said it was "HCG" (I think?), a woman's fertility drug, a drug used to restart one's system of natural hormones after coming off steroids.

In males, hCG mimics L H and helps restore and maintain testosterone production in the testes. As such, hCG is commonly used during and after steroid cycles to maintain and restore testicular size as well as endogenous testosterone production.

Isnt a 50 game suspension from failing your 2nd test?

I'm pretty sure the current one is 50/100/life

keener's probably thinking of the original steroid policy, which was:

1st offense: lose hot tub privileges

2nd offense: mean letter from commissioner's office

3rd offense: stern face to face talking-to by bud selig.

4th offense: 1 game suspension

5th offense: 2 game suspension

...

500th offense: permanent ban from baseball.

Haha, thats great. Also yea I was thinking of the 1st drug policy.

Plashke is ripping Manny a new one on ESPN right now, he certainly doesnt believe the Manny story.

It's the absolute opposite on MLB network. Reynolds is practically apologizing for him, saying that he "has no doubt that soon Ramirez will come out and talk about it," and he is certain "that Ramirez will tell the truth about all of this and of everything that happened".

Only Costas had the stones to call out Manny Ramirez on the program.

Oh my gosh, this gets more and more funny.

That's just Harold being Harold. He's the biggest player apologist in the business. Every player is just amazing and great and terrific and all the rest.

It also has legitimate use as a fertility drug for males, increasing sperm production.

So poor Manny was just trying to have some kids. Manny being Shawn Kemp maybe?

It's certainly possible. I'd love to knock up Manny's wife.

He even went so far as to put part of the blame on MLB teams, saying that part of the problem is that these players are allowed to seek treatments from their own doctors(Gasp!) instead of exclusively getting all treatment from the team doctors. "Teams are so strict players cant even make a phone call out of the clubhouse without a list of numbers and call recipients, yet when it comes to their own health they are allowed to see whatever physicians they want".

This is crazy. Harold is taking all responsibility of what goes in and out of their bodies off of the player.

Pretty standard PCT drug.

I wonder what kind of super-roids he's using that went undetected.

Yeah, if that's true, its pretty obviously he was roiding. When I first heard the story, I was thinking it would be a JC Romero kinda story, but its becoming pretty clear he was roiding.

I dunno... I do have a hard time believing Manny would stand up and fight if he was actually taking it for fertility. "My boys swim in circles" isn't exactly something you want to announce to the world.

It's part of being high profile though...

Let's just say the odds are extremely slim it was for anything else. Anybody who uses roids in any remotely responsible/safe manner goes on these types of drugs towards the end and after a cycle. That's why they test for them in the first place.

This isn't remotely unusual. It's the norm for a roider.
