One of Doug Gottlieb's locks for this season.

2. The Big Ten is very much like its football counterpart.

Though Michigan State and Purdue have Final Four potential, the league thrives on great coaching, tremendous facilities, fan support and returning mid-level talent. MSU is like Ohio State in football in that it seems to have more pros than the rest of the league (the Buckeyes usually lose most of theirs after a year, with Evan Turner as the exception). But like OSU in football, the Spartans lack a key element to success. In their case it's experienced big men and/or top-level interior play. Expect the Big Ten to be really good out of the gates with the top six teams bringing a lot of pieces back. Minnesota and Illinois have some serious talent coming in. Wisconsin, meanwhile, seems to be a little stale -- good, but stale. In other words, the Big Ten is fine top to bottom, but I do not expect to see a team from the league win the national championship.

umm what? Big Ten football has arguably one great team, a couple good teams and the rest is mediocre to bad. Big Ten basketball has two great teams, 4 very good teams, 3 mediocre and 2 bad. Not very comparable. To put it simply Big Ten football is no where near the best conference this season while in basketball they likely are the best conference.

Gottlieb's an idiot. The Big Ten is in the running for worst BCS football conference and is in the running for best basketball conference. He admits that MSU brings back most of their talent from a team that went to the title game, but they can't win it all?

Syracuse lost an exhibition to LeMoyne tonight. Oops.

Wasn't it last year when Michigan St. lost to a D-2 school? It worked out ok for them.

2007. Lost to Grand Valley State in 2OT

Damn it. Carry on then.

Looking forward to the start of basketball season.

UCD should have a solid team as they return pretty much everyone of significance with the exception of one player. Mark Payne supposedly learned to shoot, which would be an amazing asset if its true, and if they can learn to play a little defense and beat a zone defense, they'll be in contention in the Big West.

My former high school soccer teammate got in the game for Purdue tonight. He was a star for the high school across the street from Purdue. Averaged more than 20 points and 6 rebounds his senior season and got low end Div I but chose to stay home and go to Purdue. Played pick up games against some of the players and Painter asked him to walk-on. Kind of cool.

KU kicked off it's season w an exhibition against mighty Fort Hayes State.

We have more than a few cupcakes, but we do also play Memphis at a neutral site, @ Temple @UCLA, @ #11 Tennessee, vs. #15 Michigan, vs #12 Cal, @#3 Texas, and vs #16 OU. So there should be some good games.

Who was it and what high school did you go to? I'm guessing it is Bubba Day, since he is the only guy from west side.

Yeah it's Bubba. I grew up playing soccer against/with him and his brother. His brother is a year ahead of me and Bubba was a freshman when I was a senior. Another one of their brother's was in my brothers class and they played soccer together.

Doubt anyone really cares but this is his Purdue bio.

Holds West Lafayette High School records for career three-point field goals, three-point field goal attempts and free throw percentage ... Ranks second in school history in points and assists ... Averaged 21 points per game as a senior ... Earned third-team all-state honors in soccer as a senior ... A three-time all-conference selection and a two-time honoree on both the all-district and all-area teams on the pitch ... Holds the school record for goals and ranks second in assists ... Coached on the hardwood by former Purdue assistant coach David Wood.

I was just asking because I went to Benton Central

I'm sorry.

In all seriousness though which farm did you grow up on?

I grew up in the town of Fowler, so I wasn't on a farm but I have several friends who do. I am Bubba's year, but I am at Notre Dame. Every year I normally go back over x-mas break for a game in the paint crew. One of my good friends from BC who is my neighbor is actually dating Bobby Riddell. ha.

Nonetheless, I am really excited for Purdue bball this year. It's also weird to think that we have the preseason player of the year on our team. We don't have much of a supporting cast, but hopefully one of the freshman can step up and play a decent-sized role.

???

Robbie Hummel was picked last season as preseason player of the year. Kalin Lucas was picked this year.

Speaking of Big Ten preseason stuff I really hate when any conference ignores positions where voting. The preseason team is Manny Harris, Kalin Lucas, Talor Battle, Evan Turner and Robbie Hummel. That's 3 guards, a wing player and a wing/PF player. I don't think you should be strictly limited to C, 2 F's and 2 G's but they should at least be a team that would be realistically fielded. No one on that preseason team is even close to a center and the only true forward plays on the wing shooting three's half the time.

I was talking about Harangody being the leading vote-getter on the all-american preseason team.

I'm following ND this year about 90 percent for Gody and 10 percent on the desperate hope that the Irish can continue their pattern of having a great year when their expectations are low. Unfortunately he has no chance of winning the end of the season honors because ND's not going to be that good and the voters won't give it to someone who's not on a great team.

Isiah Thomas lost his coaching debut at Florida International on Wednesday night when Northwood, an NAIA school coached by Rollie Massimino, beat the Panthers 71-61 in an exhibition game.

Rollie [expletive] Massimino is still coaching?

At least Isiah only lost to the best NAIA team money can buy.

Not to derail the thread, but does 98.1 WIBN still exist out there?

I was just curious. I did a lot of sports work for them years ago.
