So the Cubs newest first round pick is missing time due to mono? Isn't that what Vitters had? That's the thing you get from making out with dirty chicks and/or the excuse pregnant girls use for missing a semester of school. Why are our top draft picks hooking up with dirty girls? If they are worthy of first round selections, shouldn't they be able to land a better class of female?

You're jumping to the conclusion that they are hooking up with dirty girls. Are we just throwing the pregnant possibility?

I am making that assumption. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think they got knocked up.

Vitters had mono during his senior year of HS, right? Then because of that and the layoff between drafting him and signing him, they didn't have him play at the end of '07. That's my memory at least.

EDIT: Nevermind, didn't read carefully and took it seriously.

Why would you not take it seriously.

Vitters did play in 2007. He hit like .100 at Mesa and Boise and might not have gotten an extra basehit during that time.

Mono really sucks. It should always be taken seriously.

I once thought I had mono for an entire year. It turned out I was just really bored.

I'm not sure what's worse, you using a Wayne's World quote or me knowing it. Now I'm just depressed knowing that movie was released almost 20 years old.

#Darwin Barney, SS, Cubs (Triple-A Iowa): 2-for-5, 3 RBI, 2 K. Batting .354 in July and .303/.337/.379 overall; good fielder, great makeup, could play a decade in the big leagues as a utilityman.

#Hak-Ju Lee, SS, Cubs (Low-A Peoria): 4-for-5, 3B, HR (1), 2 R, RBI, BB. 19-year-old Korean is hitting .389/.441/.519 in July and up to .287/.354/.364 overall; plus defense, arm and speed.

#Matt Szczur, OF, Cubs (Short-season Boise): 3-for-4, 2B, RBI. Fifth-round pick and former Villanova wide receiver is 23-for-55 (.418) in 13 games for Hawks.

isn't szczur not done playing WR for 'nova?

We don't know yet. He got 100,000 to play baseball for us this summer and another 500,000 IF he chooses not to play at Nova next year.

I thought it was all set that Szczur was going back to play college football this fall. As I understood, the $500K kicks in if he skips the NFL combine next spring, and makes a written declaration to play baseball.

Yeah, BP is wrong. Szczur is returning to Villanova in a couple of weeks. He gets to play his senior year of football. Then, by February 16th, he has to decide on the NFL vs the Cubs - he gets $500,000 guaranteed if he sticks to baseball (on top of the $100,000 he already got from the Cubs). And obviously the Cubs and Szczur can renegotiate in February which is what Jeff Samardzija did in the same situation near his deadline.

Maybe the next time the Cubs draft a football player he can have some vowels in his name.

It's too early to proclaim how his career will unfold. But the fact is right now he sucks.

Yeah, let's trade Vitters for a proven veteran like Yuniesky Betancourt. Jersey Cubs Fan is right. Let's move Vitters now before he loses his prospect tag in 2016.

It's amazing to me how bad people are at reading. Either that, or how afraid people are to admit when a prospect they have hope for is playing poorly. It's not like admitting he sucks right now commits you to a lifetime of hating Josh Vitters. He sucks, but maybe in the future he won't.

Let alone when a guy they don't like is playing well. For example, Colvin, Tyler

Colvin is playing well? He started out the season well, but hes definitely not playing well right now, or over the last 2 months.

decided to wade through some DSL cubs info. DSL cubs 1 beat their opponents 19-2 today; the other team made 9 errors in the game, which is just fantastic. some of the guys who look interesting on that team (based on age/production):

kelvin encarnacion, cf: .216/.354/.275/.629, 21 bb, 17 k, 11 sb (18 years old, 7 months... young and good eye, obviously no pop yet)

jesus rodriguez, 2b: .284/.442/.313/.755, 16 bb, 13 k, 7 sb (18 years, 11 months old)

marco hernandez, ss: .282/.335/.359/.694, 12 bb, 13 k, 13 sb (17 years, 11 months old)

delbis arcila, of: .268/.400/.346/.746, 27 bb, 30 k, 2 sb (17 years, 3 months old)

carlos montero, 3b: .288/.362/.340/.701, 17 bb, 25 k, 7 sb (20 years, 0 months)

oliver zapata, of: .260/.339/.385/.723, 20 bb, 28 k, 10 sb (17 years, 10 months)

gioskar amaya, ss: .267/.376/.363, 21 bb, 22 k, 13 sb (17 years, 7 months)

starling peralta: 47.0 ip, 38 h, 15 bb, 48 k, 2.68 era (19 years, 8 months - third year in the DSL though)

amaury paulino: 45.0 ip, 33 h, 13 bb, 41 k, 2.00 era (18 years, 11 months - big improvement in control from last year)

ramon garcia: 6-0, 40.1 ip, 26 h, 5 bb, 28 k, 0.89 era (about to turn 19 - third year in the DSL)

willengton cruz: 32.1 ip, 15 h, 17 bb, 40 k, 2.23 era (about to turn 20, second year in the DSL)

luis villalba: 30.1 ip, 29 h, 14 bb, 19 k, 2.97 era (17 years, 9 months)

pretty much the whole DSL Cubs 1 pitching staff has been really good this year... there are a handful of other 18-19 year old relievers who also have good numbers.

what stood out to me about the hitters is that many of them have good walk rates, which is nice to see (rather than the nelson perez types)

That Cubs team is 32-12, while the other one is 10-35.......Which proves AZPhil right about that: The Cubs put all of their best prospects on one team. They don't necessarily get it right at the beginning of the season, but they move guys around until they do.

also, it was nice to see colin richardson get the win with a 3 perfect innings yesterday (along with 3 k's). it was his 5th pro outing and he'd given up at least a run in each of his other appearances. seems like he was running into babip problems, though, as his numbers aren't that bad (7 ip, 10 h, 6 er, 1 hr, 0 bb, 9 k)

speaking of the DSL, i really want to know what happened to carlos henry. the cubs gave him a reported 110k bonus and then he played like someone who had never been on a baseball field before.

BA has a subscriber-only piece on the Cubs' late round finds, particularly Justin Bour and Trey McNutt. It's mostly Fleita gushing without much info. Like this:

"It doesn't matter where you come from or what round you go in, if you make the major leagues, they are not going to ask how much money you signed for, what round you went in or even how old you are," Fleita said. "They want to know if you can play. That's how we treat them here. I kind of forget where they came from and what round they went in on purpose. They are all big leaguers until they prove differently."
