Cubs third round pick Jacob Hannemann slight tear in right non-throwing elbow. rehab and rest prescribed. no surgery.

That's the 22 year old OF from BYU.

He was hitting .290/.313/.468 at Boise.

Really took those Ellsbury comps to heart.

Hahaha

Hannemann had completely fallen off my radar with all the other MiLB excitement. Hopefully he's healthy for instructs, he more than most needs the reps.

Sounds like Vizcaino is on track for the AFL. That'd be nice to see obviously.

Seems like we'll have a lot to follow this fall.

Yeah, McLeod mentioned Javy playing winter ball as well, so that may tell us the AFL isn't on his agenda this offseason.

Law: I was on our Chicago affiliate earlier today and the host asked me if it was realistic that the Cubs could compete for a playoff spot in 2015. I thought it was optimistic, but not unrealistic...

McCleod: On the first part of your question, regarding the playoffs. You also have to remember with our division, with those teams, STL, PIT, CIN, they are all top organizations that are great and it's going to be a bear.

Hopefully under promise, over deliver is at play here.

two years ago the pirates lost 90 games. now they have one of the best records in baseball. don't know why everyone seems to think it takes 7 years to turn a team around.

especially now that there's actually talent in the pipe line in the semi-near future

The Pirates handed the keys over to Neal Huntington in 2007 though. So this is only the 6th year of his version of their rebuild. That means we need to give Theo and Jed until 2017 before we expect a Pirates like season.

He said that at the introductory press conference. Since then, he's admitted he didn't realize how bad of shape the organization was actually in when he took over.

And that the budget is more restricted than they expected.

And the changes in the new CBA were more restrictive than anticipated.

I still view 2015 as the opening of their window for competing for/in the playoffs.

I kind of hate the entire concept. If you aren't the Astros, you are competing for the playoffs when you start the season. It's a high-variance sport. We could have been competing for the playoffs this year.

In reality, it's not. Major League Baseball is not the National Football League.

It is not the NFL, but it is closer to the NFL in terms of ease of making the playoffs than any of the other major sports. 33.3% - 37.5%, compared to more than 50% in the NBA and NHL.

The NFL starts every year with 4-5 teams that have no chance 4-5 teams that are close to locks and a whole bunch in between. MLB is similar. You can't overhaul an entire roster as quickly as you can in the NFL, but the NFL also requires you put together a much bigger roster, plus injuries are a much bigger problem, plus coaches and their respective strategies also matter.

It might be, but that would have to only be by choice. Because it could open next year if they wanted to try and open it.

How do you think they should do that?

Sign Ellsbury and Tanaka. Put together a solid bullpen out of the guys we have and maybe one additional piece if there's one out there.

Could easily compete in 2014. Reinforcements start coming in the form of Baez and maybe Alcantara or Bryant late next season and they go from there.
