Catch-22: Geovany Soto sat for the second straight game Thursday night but will start Friday against left-hander Randy Wolf.

"When [Koyie] Hill was catching, we were winning a little more consistently," Piniella said. "With Soto, we need for him to start swinging the bat."

Got that guys? We were winning because of Koyie Hill.

CUBS are 31-40 when Soto starts at catcher

CUBS are 31-20 when K Hill starts at catcher

Team ERA when Soto catches 4.14

Team ERA when K Hill catches 3.55

Yep, we got it.

They had a very good record with Hill starting a couple of years ago too! But,they felt the need to bring in Paul Bako. Thankfully, Hill got a chance.

I can't find the exact quote, but several radio shows today mentioned Lou's comments that he planned to "stick with his veterans" down the stretch. Bradley has been ok, but how can Lou honestly think that Soriano in LF gives the Cubs a better chance to win right now than Fox? I understand that Soriano is making a lot of money, but it should be about winning baseball games. First there was the barrage of excuses (high altitude, big ballparks, injuries, etc.) and now Lou is falling back on blind loyalty for veteran players. When did he turn into Dusty Baker?

That was probably initiated by yesterday's Cubs Inbox by Carrie Muskat (LINK) ...

Despite the career-high four-hit game, Fox may not be in Tuesday's lineup. Manager Lou Piniella said he plans on relying on the veterans for the stretch, so Fox may have to learn how to contribute off the bench. That's been a difficult adjustment.

Down 3 in the first inning and Lou has Bradley try to bunt.

It happens too frequently to not have at least tacit approval. If Lou wasn't an idiot about bunting, he would tell the whole team every game "hey dumbasses, quit bunting in the first inning." Since they keep doing it, I have to assume it's on his sign or at least they have the ok to do it.

Bob's comment was pretty revealing, too.

He said "I'd have to believe (it was on Bradley's own). Lou Piniella doesn't like to bunt in a tie ball game in the ninth inning. Why would he have Milton Bradley bunting in the first inning trailing by three runs? It makes no sense whatsoever."

Now, I agree that it made no sense, but Lou would absolutely, 100% bunt in a tie game in the ninth inning with anybody except Lee and Ramirez and probably Soriano.

Oh, I'm sure they have the ok to do it. But I'm guessing the approval is that if you feel you can bunt for a hit, you can do it. Bradley has tried bunting more in a variety of situations lately.

Lou is not a big sacrifice bunt guy, but the players have shown that they are encouraged to learn how to bunt for hits. The pitchers do it more than any other team in the league, and players like Kosuke, Theriot, and Bradley also try it from time to time.

He would, but he wouldn't like it.

Lou called for Fukudome to hit and run or bunt with Ted Lilly on 1st with 1 out and Andres Blanco on deck. Fukudome swung and missed (maybe missed a bunt sign? But wtf with Blanco on deck) and Lilly was thrown out by a mile.

Ironically, he was actually a lot closer to stealing it than Aramis or Soto would have been

Lilly wasn't supposed to be running.

Aramis is definitely faster than Lilly.

Can someone explain why bobby scales keeps starting in LF? Hes a 31 year old rookie who doesn't really have a future with the team. Why not start Jake Fox or Sam Fuld who plays good defense has a good OBP against RHP and see if he can contribute.

No, we can't. But good contribution to the thread, we all agree.

Fuld has a thumb injury that keeps him from batting - he can only play defense at this point. That's why they brought up Taguchi.

There's no excuse for Scales over Fox, though.
