Am I the only one that thinks this is strange as heck? How does a 20 year old "top prospect" end up with a 43 year old wife?

Amalia Tabata Pereira, 43, was being questioned by Florida detectives in Manatee County, where the baby girl was found unharmed Tuesday afternoon, a day after she was taken from the clinic. Plant City Chief of Police Bill McDaniel said authorities are looking to charge Pereira with false imprisonment.

She is the wife of Jose Tabata, 20, an outfielder and one of the top three prospects for the Pirates, who train in Bradenton, which is in the county where the infant was found. In a statement, Pirates president Frank Coonelly said they have received "no indication that Jose is believed to have had any involvement in this matter."

Jose Tabata addressed the matter in a statement released by the team.

"I was shocked to be told today that my wife has been arrested for kidnapping. I am hurt, frustrated, and confused by her actions," Tabata said. "I have and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement officials in anyway that I can. Until I have all of the facts, I cannot comment any further."

Rotoworld provided a little more info...

Amalia Tabata Pereira, 43, allegedly abducted the infant Monday afternoon and reportedly turned the child, who was safe, in to the Manatee County Sheriff's Office on Tuesday afternoon. "I was shocked to be told today that my wife has been arrested for kidnapping," Tabata said in a statement. "I am hurt, frustrated and confused by her actions. I have and will continue to cooperate with law enforcement officials in any way that I can. Until I have all of the facts, I cannot comment any further." That the 20-year-old Tabata is married to a 43-year-old is one of the oddities that has led baseball personel to question his makeup. However, this borders on the unbelievable. Plant City police Capt. Darrell Wilson indicated that Pereira has a criminal record that includes theft and fraud convictions and that police did not have a hometown for her because she has several aliases.

Yay Manatee County! My hometown.

You all know what I know.

I'm kinda scratching my head over this one.

From today's PG:

Not really sure it tells us much, though.

As For Moskos, I've read absolutely nothing about him this spring training. Just a reminder: The guy who drafted him over Weiters now works for the cubs. (I'll take what ever little pathetic victories I can.)

very well played. Though I would guess he was drafted due to signability reasons over Wieters.

I'm not so sure. That's what we all thought at the time, too. But, listening to Littlefield, it seems he wanted a college pitcher who'd get to the majors quicker.

To show that it wasn't a money move, he traded for Morris.
