Cubs sign Estaban German to minor league deal

Cubs Sign Esteban German

By Tim Dierkes [March 13 at 12:03pm CST]

According to a press release, the Cubs signed infielder Esteban German to a minor league deal. He was released by the Royals last week after clearing waivers.

German, 31, hit .245/.303/.338 in 242 plate appearances last year while playing in left field as well as all around the infield. Presumably the Cubs consider German a possible third base backup; he played 281 innings at the hot corner in '07 and 43 in '08. The Cubs will have the option of keeping German for 2010, as he'll be arbitration-eligible after '09.

because you can never have too many bad middle infielders. well, I guess you can but dont tell Hendry.

It certainly seems as though the Cubs are going to keep one of Koskie, Rivas, or German, especially now that Miles is hurting.

Which is going to put the squeeze on Hoffpauir. If they keep 2 backup infielders, it's either the guy with options* or the guy with a guaranteed contract (Gathright).

*Or maybe he's out of options.

Keep one of the NRI 3B backups AND Hoffpauir.

Go with 11 pitchers most of the time. Release Vizcaino. Marmol, Gregg, Heilman, Gaudin, Guzman, and Cotts in the bullpen.

Work out a trade which allows you to option Patton.

When you need a 12th pitcher, run the Iowa shuttle and bounce back and forth between 12th pitcher (Patton, Ascanio, Wells, Stevens, Hart, etc.) and 7th bench guy (Hoffpauir, Fox, Deeds, etc.).

Why do the Cubs rarely have a good bench, they just have a bench that suck at a wide variety of position. When was the last time we had a GREG DOBBS.

The Cubs tend to stress versatility over any sort of production. They've brought in guys with a reputation of being able to play multiple positions, jack of all trade types who do lots of things, none of them well. I'd prefer to mix in guys who are really good at something, but not well rounded enough to start everyday.

I'm assuming they don't even consider 11 pitchers. With Harden's health, Marshall's questionable ability to throw every 5th day, Zambrano's potential slow decline, Dempster's lack of conistent durability, and an overall questionable bullpen, I just don't see them going in with fewer than the "norm".

Cubs signed infielder Esteban German to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

It's disappointing that this is the best German could do. The Cubs should already have a full bench with Aaron Miles, Reed Johnson, Joey Gathright, Micah Hoffpauir and Paul Bako. It'd make a lot of sense to bump Gathright and go with German and his superior ability to get on base, but we doubt it will happen.

Nothing wrong with this signing. German gives us some more depth, and will probably have to start the season in Triple A. It's funny that people actually bash these minor signings. For all we know German might be released in May, after not being called up to the big club.

I would make a joke about Hendry and mediocre middle infielders, but it's just too darn easy.

Yeah, Hendry with that whopping 3 middle infielders on his 40 man roster! Two are his starting SS and 2B, but this dope also has an extra one to make three! How redundant!! He is in love with middle infielders! And did we mention Hendry is fat? Maybe he also acquired some doughnuts, ha, ha, ha!!

I'm not singling this year out. It's a combination of the past few years. And I didn't make a fat joke, you did.

Think about the correlation, you will figure it out.

Why don't you make a constructive post instead of attacking other people's opinions with sarcasm? German isn't good and this isn't a good signing. If you really can't recall the long list of mediocrity at the middle infield Hendry has brought on board in his tenure - go look it up. There is no reason for or excuse for your sarcasm.

German's not great, but I think this is a really good signing.

German is what every Aaron Miles fanboy thinks Miles is.

Really good? I don't think its really good. He's a better option than Miles, Gathright, or Rivas though.
