German's not great, but I think this is a really good signing.

German is what every Aaron Miles fanboy thinks Miles is.

Really good? I don't think its really good. He's a better option than Miles, Gathright, or Rivas though.

Yes, because it's signing a useful part to a no-risk minor league deal.

Why do the Cubs rarely have a good bench, they just have a bench that suck at a wide variety of position. When was the last time we had a GREG DOBBS.

When did they have someone as good as Dobbs? Was last year that long ago? Last year they also had a good bench in case you were kidnapped by the Taliban and missed it.

Why don't you make a constructive post instead of attacking other people's opinions with sarcasm? German isn't good and this isn't a good signing. If you really can't recall the long list of mediocrity at the middle infield Hendry has brought on board in his tenure - go look it up. There is no reason for or excuse for your sarcasm.

Sorry mom. Let me try again.

German is a no risk signing that costs the Cubs very little and potentially could help in case the Cubs have injuries and need a short term solution to fill the gap. It seems worthwhile since it did not cost them anything and if he does not work out there is no down side.

Is that better? Or do I need to throw in an obligatory stale joke about middle infielders in a weak attempt at humor even though it is no longer relevant?

Fixed that for you.

German isn't good and this isn't a good signing

A minor league deal is never a bad signing. German is on the same contract as Mike Stanton, So Taguchi, Chad Fox and others. If he's not needed or he sucks, you release him.

German is what every Aaron Miles fanboy thinks Miles is.

I think thats a little unfair, Miles is a career 289/329/693 guy in 2077 career major league AB's. German career numbers are better, but alot smaller sample size. In 2006 German hit 326/422/881 in 279 AB's and in the first half of 07 he hit 279/375/768 in 219 AB's. So he was a pretty good bench player, and alot better then Miles. But the last year and half German has been bad. In the second half of 07 he hit 240/308/657 in 129 AB's, and last year he hit 245/303/641 in 216 AB's. So the league might have caught up to German, and Miles is much more of a sure thing. There's nothing wrong with giving German a chance, but we can't count on him right now.

Miles has had one year in his major league career where he shouldn't have been taken out back and shot. Is it your belief that Miles, at the age of 31 vastly improved his baseball abilities, and at the same time Esteban German's baseball abilities careened off of a cliff at the age of 30?

German only has 900 something career AB's, he's really only been a major leaguer since 06. He's been really good for a year and half, and really bad the last year and half. Thats the thing I don't really call three seasons much of a career. I'd be fine with Miles as a bench player if he put up his 04 or 07 numbers as well. Maybe getting less AB's will improve Miles numbers. Since he's pretty much averaged 400 plus a season. Getting say 300 or 330 AB's could make him more effective in a smaller sample size.

whoa, if what miles got is the going rate for players like him, then how did we get german so cheap? man this hendry guy really is a genius afterall.

Mike Fontenot and Reed Johnson were both very great off the bench last year, and Ward/Hofpauir, Blanco, and Cedeno rounded out one of the more solid benches in the league.

Miles, Gathright, Hoffpauir(hopefully), and Johnson/Fukudome will be a better bench than a lot of people think. Granted Bako will be a waste of space aside from the 1 day a week he catches. We wont have the power we did last year, but it will be better than a lot of teams have.

well i didn't think he meant it literally. it's still stupid and unnecessary especially for this "family" board.

No, that bench still doesn't look like it's any good. I feel like you're almost just throwing out random names. Let me try. "McKinley, Roosevelt, Harding, Coolidge, Taft, Hoover, now there's a bench with some depth and versatility."

German's career statistical curve has a decidedly steroidal shape.

Why did he stop taking steroids 3 years after testing began?

And how'd he get the good stuff so early in his minor league career?

No personal attacks.

I can't help myself, so I'll apologize for this up front.

Is this a personal attack because he called your statement stupid, or because he implied you are a redneck ???

it's been a long list of mediocrity because he hasn't spent any money on middle infielders. not that i want mediocre players but i'd rather have him blow $2.5M on aaron miles than big money on julio lugo or whoever.

plus derosa is better than mediocre and fontenot was a good acquisition.

DeRosa was a great signing as it turned out. No argument there. Fontenot sat in the minors when he was ready though behind some horrible players. Now you have crap like Miles and Rivas in camp and Cedeno traded for nothing. What is the point of that? German is a good risk - I can accept that - a really good signing? Not really. The bench was good last year and now is returning to crap because of hendry's affection for worn out, never good veterans like Miles and Bako and Gathright. I find it hard to get excited about German when I see all these crappy backups paraded through camp year after year. If you are getting crap for the bench, at least find someone who can play good defense.

Let me get this straight with the mods. Me calling this post, and this style of rebuttal, [expletive] would qualify me as the offensive poster instead of posters that use random nonsense when their argument is shown to lack simple comparative observation skills? Got it.

Back to topic. You badnews (I get the moniker clearly now) say something about wishing for Greg Dobbs. A couple of people point out that they have had someone as good as Dobbs as recently as last year. You also add, "they just have a bench that suck at a wide variety of position." Again, it's pointed out that you have no clue because the Cubs bench was among the best in the NL and all you have as a retort is to change the argument to some sublime rattling off of dead presidents?

Yeah, I should be banned for calling that style of discussion [expletive].

Posted

Did badnews even say anything about the Cubs 2008 bench? I didn't see that anywhere.

The "sucking at every position" was in reference to the current bench, which is significantly weaker than last year's.

it's probably easier to just put badnews on ignore, most other people have.
