Put me down as being a little worried that this is going to stick in Marmol's mind. That fear will go away with a few filthy outings from him, but still.

This is not good...Carlos wanted so bad to pitch for his country and took so much pride in it. He came in to close out the weak hitting Netherlands and advance his country to the second round. Instead he blew the game and got the DR eliminated. This is the kind of performance that will get in his head and stay there for awhile IMO

Haha, classic UMF. It's not even the middle of March and you're panicking.

It's not panicking, its called an opinion.

Your opinion is filled with panic. If Carlos blew a game this early in ST, no one would care. On that last play, the guy just stuck out the bat and placed it perfectly. Nothing much you could do about it. But I never wanted Carlos to be the closer this year. I am not sure if he has the make-up yet.

It will be out of his mind after some tequilla shots and his first outing back as a Cub.

It's not panic at all. I am not worried about the Cubs bullpen as a whole, only Carols' mental state following this game. You can't compare this to a spring training game because its completely different. In spring, pitchers are trying to work on their pitches and build their arm strength, and the results are not important. In the WBC, results are crucial, especially in a country like DR where the country is hanging on every pitch. Carlos has been pitching all winter and all of his pitches presumably should at in or near midseason form. It could be a deadarm period though. Regardless, this game meant a lot to himself and his country, and I'm worried that the result might carry over in his mind. We all have heard of examples of players that are overtaken by the mental side of the game, so its not a stretch to think that it might happen in this case. A tad presumptious, but not a stretch.

Marmol last pitched in the DWL on January 25. It's been almost 2 months. He was working on his mechanics in ST, he certainly wasn't in midseason form.

The U.S. can play the Netherlands by beating Italy tomorrow. That'd be good.

They're playing Venezuela tomorrow. What a win or a loss does as far as Round 2 depends on who wins tomorrow's Netherlands/Puerto Rico game.

So he had 3 weeks off between January 25th thru February 14th when pitchers reported. Doesn't seem like he was that far off when he started throwing in Mesa. He should be sharper than most MLB pitchers in the WBC, unless he was suffering through a deadarm period.

Has Gregg even pitched in ST? I haven't heard much about him.

Yes he's thrown 4 scoreless innings, while striking out four, giving up two hits, and walking one batter. You probably haven't heard much about him since he's throwing well. If he had a 7 era right now, fans would be freaking out about him.

well that was a strike

Horrible AB by Beltran, pitcher is no where near the zone and he swings at both pitches he sees.

Geo just stood tall with Randal Simon chugging towards him at home!

Geo stared down the vegetarian water buffalo that is Prince Fielder as he rumbled towards the plate and gave not an inch to the gargantuan oaf. Compared to that, Randall Simon must have seemed like a house cat.

would be nice if MLB network had radar on Lilly, would be nice to see where he's at.

nice 1-2-3 first for Lilly capped by a nice K of Abreu

I was thinking the same thing last night for Marmol, about the gun, not about the nice 1-2-3 inning.

Hank's catching for Venezuela!

and taking Lilly deep

Looks like Lilly hung either a change or his slurve type pitch. Watching the game on the new MLBTV player and it looks really good, well worth the investment can't wait to see the Cubbies on it.
