They're 1 overpaid, aging mega slugger away from dominating the hell out of the NL West. With Ethier, Kemp, Martin, Loney, Furcal, and now Hudson, thats a great core they have. Add Manny in that mix, along with their rotation, that awful division wont know what hit em.

Only $3.4 guaranteed with another 4.6 in incentives. How bad does the Miles signing look now?

It was awful at the time. It would be awful if this signing never happened. This just puts its awfulness into perspective.

I guess it depends on how easy those incentives are to hit. I have a feeling it might be based on something like games played for alot of it. Plus you're missing one big important part about the Dodgers signing Hudson, and thats the Dodgers giving up a first round pick.

Their rotation isn't really all that special imo... unless kershaw dominates

incentives are always based on games played/at-bats/innings pitched. you can't make incentives based on stats

You can have incentives for awards and all-star appearances though

true, just not HR, RBI, Runs, Hits, Average, Wins, K's, Saves, etc.

I'm sure that it probably isn't the case with this scenario because it's such a large money differential, but there have been plenty of incentives within contracts that don't deal with "health related" measurements.

Frank Thomas, when he signed his one-year deal with the Athletics in January 2006, had the possibility to pocket $50,000 if he won a Gold Glove
Brian McCann 6-year deal signed in March 2007 includes a seventh year (2013) as a club option (worth $12M), but the guaranteed 2012 season becomes a club option if he fails to win specified awards in 2007-2011 (The awards are not disclosed).
Alex Rodriguez will make $30M with a marketing agreement based on home run milestones ($6M each for reaching 660, 714, 755 and tying and breaking major league HR record)

Their not "stats" per se, but they're based more on performance than GP/AB/IP.

Edit: I see that I've been beat due to the time needed to look up these specific examples. Anyway, I took the time to look them up so everyone can just deal with the redundancy :)

Potenitally, it can be, with Kershaw and Billingsly potential ace caliber pitchers, and Kuroda not too far behind. especially if Jason Schmidt can stay healthy and find his way again.

On their downside, they've been the poster team for bad contracts as of late, between Schmidt, Juan Pierre, and Andruw Jones, so if Furcal flops, and they do sign Manny to something ridiculous, and the end up missing the playoffs, it's going to look pretty bad for them.

what??

a max of 2.1m for miles versus a max of 8m for hudson? miles sucks, but i'll take his deal over a recovering-from-wrist-injury-Hudson everyday. especially when you consider the lost draft pick, had we have signed hudson.

thinking that the miles contract looks worse b/c of this deal is pretty foolish.

Its a 3.4 mil base with 380,000 in incentives, making 4.6 the max, so yeah, Id definitely rather have Hudson at that price than Miles at 2.1. However, it does suggest that if we wanted another middle infielder, we could probably get Nomar or Orlando Cabrera for the 3 mil range, which would definitely be worth it.

God I hate talking about 3 million dollars like its nothing.

380,000 is the signing bonus. It's 3.4 plus a possible 4.6 in incentives. If he meets all the incentives he'll make 8 mil.

I guess it's a win win then. If he doesnt meet the incentives, they only pay him 3.4 mil. If he does end up meeting all of the incentives, the have to pay him sinificantly more, but It will have been worth it.

Personally, I think all contracts should be incentive laden. Im sure the Dodgers, of all teams would agree with that.

As earlier mentioned its most likely ABs or games played that will allow him to reach those incentives. He could always play a lot of games and get a lot of ABs and not play well. Maybe he's affected by the wrist injury? I'm not really expecting this, but there is a possibility for the Dodgers to lose out on this deal.

As has been mentioned before, there aren't performance based incentives (unless you count incentives based on awards), so he'll probably get close to the full 8 million if he just stays healthy. As much as I dislikd the Miles signing, I'd probably have rather done than than give Hudson close to 8 mil AND lose the first round pick.

Come on. It's OK, you don't have to like the Miles signing. You also don't have to reach for assumptions to display your distaste of it. How is it an automatic that "it would have been worth it?" The Dodgers invested alot of money in that middle infield and they have more questions than certainties with them for the money paid. Back injuries tend not to help players and a little guy with marginal power doesn't help himself with a wrist injury (at least in the first year after injury).

Sure, there's a chance that both have big years, but there are enough questions about them to at least not fawn over their signings as if it was something masterful. $8 mil and a first round pick for one year of Hudson is not great.

I dont hate the Miles signing. It just is what it is. A backup/platoon middle infielder. Im just saying that if we could have gotten something better for a reasonable price, we should have.
