What a strange list. We clearly aren't going by actual accomplishment, or Eli Manning, Kurt Warner and Ben Rothlisberger, QB's that has actually won a Super Bowl, would be in the top 5. Like jersey said, the definition they use is awful. I love how the definition requires that they would actually be able to have success in any system, and yet 4 of the top 5 have only ever been on one team in their entire career.

A QB winning a Super Bowl doesn't necessarily mean anything about his talent level.

Agreed...Rex made it to a Super Bowl, and I think we can agree he wasn't a franchise QB. But lets be honest, usually these kinds of lists do factor in those kinds of achievements. It's just unclear exactly what he's using as measurement other than complete subjectivity...that's all I meant by that comment.

The fact that his best QB's have only ever been in one system is more of a problem for this list I think.

The problem is always going to come that the best QB's are always going to only play on one team (I would argue that the system is going to change over the years for these QB's as the people around them change, even if they're still wearing the same uniform). Why would you get rid of a top QB?

It simply becomes a measure of how well-rounded the QB is. And while I understand the need to put some subjectivity in it (different teams ask different things of QB's which skew stats) there was too much subjectivity in this article. But it's a really hard task to try to compare quarterbacks because of the vast differences in talent and the fact that most QB's who are any good at all stay with their original team for most of their career.

I actually also like his rankings for the most part. There's a thin line between the QB's ranked 4th through about 12th, and so a writer has a hard time going wrong putting those quarterbacks in just about any order.

I'm not saying that he's wrong for picking QB's that were only one one team. I'm saying his definition of franchise QB is lame because there's no possible way for him measure the capability of Tom Brady outside of Belichek's system, or Phillip Rivers without Ladanian Tomlinson. I understand that some subjectivity is going to be involved in ranking QB's without a straight stat comparison. But he's adding additional subjectivity by projecting them into a scenario that we can't possibly draw any realistic conclusions.

I know the Favre debate has been dead but with it starting to look like a near certainty, here are some projections of how the Vikings compare with or without Favre.

AccuScore simulations of the Vikings and NFC North in general:

http://myespn.go.com/blogs/nfcnorth/0-12-64/Projecting-Favre-s-impact.html

Also had this Football Outsiders projection passed on to me:

Football Outsiders' 2009 projections*

Player COMP ATT PCT YDS TD INT

Brett Favre 337 509 66.2 3,558 27 18

Tarvaris Jackson 274 482 56.8 3,180 21 14

Sage Rosenfels 303 469 64.6 2,968 19 12

* Based on Football Outsiders' regression analysis.

Favre has never played football after a surgically repaired arm. I dispute that you can use his historical data in this situation and come up with anything accurate.

JP Losman, Larry Tripplett and Eric Powell are heading to the UFL to play.

According to UFL Access - which reported the news on Tuesday, two days prior to the UFL's premiere season draft - Losman is set to take the reigns of the league's Las Vegas franchise, head coached by former Giants coach and Ravens offensive coordinator Jim Fassel.

WCCO's Mark Rosen and PFT.com are reporting that Favre is "offically" a Viking. Big shock.

It was only a matter of time before he finally did sign with the Vikings.

I still don't see how his signing is beneficial to the Vikings at all. In the short term I have doubts if Favre will be much better than either of the other three quarterbacks on the Vikings' roster. Also given Favre's performance the last few years I would be concerned that he will choke yet again, whether it's at the end of the season or in the playoffs potentially. Long term this does nothing but create more confusion for the Vikings' quarterback situation. Not only does this take away valuable time from Tavaris Jackson, but then there will be the circus that will occur next offseason when Favre won't be able to make a decision about retirement.

For better news, Greg Jennings has a new contract.

Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers and Greg Jennings have agreed on the parameters of a contract that will make him among the highest-paid receivers in the National Football League, a league source has confirmed.

Fox-TV 6 in Milwaukee, citing an NFL source, first reported the deal and said it would put Jennings behind Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals on the best-paid receivers list.

Jennings' new deal will likely pay him around $9 million per season through 2012. The contract must be approved by the league and signed by both parties.

If they don't get to the playoffs this year (maybe even if they lose in Wildcard round), Childress is probably gone and you'll have the same situation he had with the Jets. Then you probably have Sage as the starter in 2010 until the new guy gets his QB. That's one way it could be cleared up. Otherwise you're right.

The move is about trying to win big(ger) this year. If healthy, I think in this offense Favre gives them the best chance to do that. I only hope if he gets hurt it's severe enough that he has to sit rather than being able to play through it and stink like last year. If he's out, Sage can be a reliable backup.

That's a huge relief that we brought back Jennings long-term. We've done surprisingly well in paying our better players recently, and for a reasonable amount to boot so I applaud Thompson in that regard. Jennings is one of the bigger playmaking WR's in the league and he should only continue to excel these next few years.

Lions trade S Gerald Alexander for WR Dennis Northcutt. Not earth-shattering at all, but interesting, I think.

Lions also picked up Jon Jansen a while back and are trying him a bit at center.

A 6'6 center, isnt Matt Birk the tallest center at 6'4, thats crazy. Not only is that crazy but the most solid position on the Lions oline is center. The Lions are funny.

They may be thinking about shifting Raiola to a guard or tackle spot (could he play left tackle?). Or they may just want to see how versatile Jansen is and use him as a backup at multiple spots.

Geoff Hangartner (Bills), John Wade (Oak) and Rudy Niswanger (Chiefs) are actually the tallest centers - at 6'5". Andre Gurode, Chris Myers, Jake Grove, John Sullivan, Nick Mangold, Jamaal Jackson, Justin Hartwig, Nick Hardwick, Kevin Mawae, Casey Rabach and Birk are also 6'4".

Oh this should go over well for Brandon Marshall:

Marshall was arrested on suspicion of DUI on Oct. 22, 2007, and according to the police report, he started verbally attacking the city of Denver and saying he wanted to leave the Broncos. "I hate Denver. I hope I get traded. I hate this f******* city," an officer wrote in the police report.

Even tho they said publicly they won't trade Marshall, but something tells me they will and these kind of stories being release to the public only means they are trying to justify it. It would not surprise me if Marshall is on another team come training camp. (note: I didn't say it would be the Bears.)

I'm trying to figure out why anyone would want Brandon Marshall, and the headaches he causes. Sure, he's a great receiver, but his off the field rap sheet is almost Pac-Man Jones'-ish..

Sometimes the risk outweighs the reward.

Because for some teams, the production on the field outweighs the problems off it.

Teams always know Terrell Owens is going to create drama but his production has been so high, that it's tough to pass him up.

Comparing Marshall to Owens is like comparing apples to oranges.

Owens might be a cancer in the clubhouse or a polarizing figure, but his rap sheet is pretty much squeaky clean (no run-ins with the law as an adult) there he won't miss any time from suspensions. Marshall, on the other hand, doesn't seem like the best teammate in the world, and his rap sheet is not clean. Therefore, the double whammy is applied.

Marshall's risk (suspension/jail time) outweigh his rewards on the field.

in his defense, though, denver is pretty terrible.
