If we are looking to sign a guy to compete for the 5th starter spot I would rather we sign Mulder or Jennings to a incentive laden deal or even a minor league deal and see if one of them turn it around. At least Mulder and Jennings have had success in the past, Shark/Marshall/Gaudin/Heilman can equal or even be better than what Looper will do. If Jennings/Mulder figure it out/stay healthy they at least have the potential to be #3 starters Looper is a fringe #4 and more a #5.

Heh at this point I expect Hendry to sing Looper to a Marquis like deal.

I hope Looper didn't go to Notre Dame.

Nope, Wichita State.

Wichita State is in Hendry's old conference. Perhaps he loves MoVal guys just as much as he does ND guys.

Looper was my boy but I don't want him on the Cubs.

NO, NO, NO, NO!

We have plenty of candidates for the 5th starter. We do not need Looper.

i don't know that we have plenty of good candidates. marshall and zambrano will probably get hurt for at least a little time this year, and harden everyone knows will get hurt as well. we probably should've just kept marquis in the first place.

Legit Candidates

Sean Marshall

Aaron Heilman

Jeff Samardzjia

Dark Horses

Chad Gaudin

Rich Hill

Mitch Atkins

Darker Horses

Angel Guzman

Kevin Hart

Randy Wells

Thats enough potential number 5 guys right there. Theres no need to throw money at another mediocre, back of the rotation starter when we're unaware of the teams financial situation.

Problem is, only one of those final six guys you listed has a good chance to even be decent as a major league starter this year. If Hill could find his control he could be #2, but I'm not betting on it. And then we have a pretty major injury risk in Harden to worry about as well.

I don't like Looper much at all, but I wouldn't be opposed to some more 5th spot insurance.

I dont think its too far of a reach to think Guz could be a decent starter this year. The guy has they stuff, but as always durability is a major factor.

I think it's a huge reach. The guy is 27, he's been horrible in limited major league innings and his health means there's no way you can count on him for more than 50 innings.

Hes been horrible while being used out of the bullpen. Hes never been in a 5 man rotation at the ML level that I can think of. Also like I said durability is his biggest issue, but if healthy Guzman has good stuff.

That's because he can't stay healthy. The major reason for using him in the pen was to protect his arm. It would be a great thing to see, if Guzman could manage to put together a full season in the rotation.

Guzman has zero durability. Everytime they stick him in the rotation, he ends up missing a significant portion of the season. Best case for Guzman would be to acclimate him to short inning relief work and hope he eventually adapts.

His stuff dictates that if he ever adjusts to the bullpen, he could very dominant in that role.

Actually he's been a starter more than a reliever at the major league level (most of it in 2006).

It's not only durability problems that cause him to miss starts. Guzman has several times had trouble with his arm after pitching 4-5 innings in a row. It's too big of a risk for the Cubs to even let him attempt to start, let alone think he's a decent possibility to make the rotation.

I see your point. However he will be another year removed from TJ surgery so if there is going to be a breakout year for him, I would think this is the year.

That's been said before. If he's going to have any sort of impact in the big leagues, it's probably going to be as a reliever. He can't be counted on to throw 5 innings in a row, and he can't be counted on to make multiple starts in a row. If he pitches twice a week and throws 50 big league innings, that would be a huge win. But even that is a reach.

Not many opposing schools in MVC are very endearing towards WSU and their coach.
