Prediction: Smoltz doesn't start more than 5 big league games.

yeah, the mlb.com article says the Sox aren't going to have him pitching til June 1, and he's going to get 5.5 mill guarenteed. That would have been a bad signing for the Cubs.

They certainly are going to have some pitchers with some serious injury issues this year with Beckett, Penny and Smoltz but they are deep enough to sustain 1 or more of them missing time. I wouldn't be surprised to see 1 of Bucholz/Masterson/Delcarmen along with another prospect or two sent to the Rangers for Salty. They have 9 starting pitchers with Beckett, Penny, Smoltz, Masterson, Lester, Bucholz, Tazawa, Wakefield and Dice-K. Edited by Cubswin11

That's because Theo Epstein is a good GM while Hendry is not.

Haha, Edgar Renteria, Julio Lugo, Matt Clement, Jason Vartiek, JD Drew(maybe Mike Lowell new deal) and even Curt Schilling last season say hello. I'm not saying Hendry is a better GM then Theo Epstein, because Theo is better. But the reason I really think he's a better GM, is because the Red Sox have gotten great production from their farm system, and the Cubs haven't. But if you wanna compare them on bad contracts given out or overpaying players, it's alot closer then people realize. Keeper you really need to bring these posts to the Cubs.com board.

I think it is default protocol, for any transaction the Red Sox make, to immediately turn around and cast it as a critque on Hendry. Think the Rocco will play in 09? Probably not.

Smoltz might not play either, he's coming off another shoulder surgery, and is 42. Risking 5.5m on Smoltz and I'm sure a few million on Baldelli is risky. But when you have money to spend, and have a good farm. You can take these risk without it really hurting you much. Neither of moves should give Cubs fans any reason to bash Hendry. Infact if Hendry spent 8m on these two guys, most fans would probably be pissed off right now. Most people just complain to complain, if the moves Hendry made this offseason work out, people will love them. Just like they did in the past few seasons, after hating them at first.

I'm not sure how the Cubs signing these two guys to major league deals would have been good moves. Please explain.

They wouldn't have been.

EDIT - Well, Smoltz wouldn't have been. Rocco would've been good to take a flyer on.

This is his first post that more than 90% of the board will agree with and now you want him to take it to Cubs.com?

This is the reason that celler dweller teams will never crawl out. It seems that all of the big free agents seems to go to the same teams such as Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, Angels, Cubs(for now anyway) leaving the rest of the teams fighting for the scraps, and when they do make a star out of the farm system, it's only a matter of time before they go where the money is. Its partly the money and partly because a lot of these players would rather jump into a ready made playoff contender than becoem a major piece of a rebuilding team. Of course every now and then, a team will get lucky, such as The Rays, who brought up a ton of prospect who all panned out, but in the end, they'll only be able to keep so many of them around, and before long the Yankees and Red Sox will once again have sole ownership of the division.

I know that Smoltz and Baldelli are far from top of the line free agents, Im just saying.

Baldelli was misdiagnosed with a metabolic and/or mitochondrial abnormalities. However, they recently have found out that he actually has channelopathy, which from my understanding having a correct diagnosis and the appropriate treatment should solve his fatigue issues.

Knowing this I would think Baldelli is worth the risk. He has the ability to be a very good RF. I would have loved the Cubs to sign him. An OF with Soriano, Baldelli, Bradley, Johnson, Fukudome would have been fantastic.

There two decent signings because they signed two players for cheap salaries and because both have huge upsides...I still don't think they were that great though and I'm not upset that the Red Sox made these moves instead of us

Baldelli is a fine speculative move, but he hasn't played a full season in four years and he's really only been great for one year. I don't think the Cubs are missing out on anything obvious.

I think everyone who is saying it was a good move is saying that because of the money mostly....and the possible potential with Baldelli

Wait, did I miss something? Why wouldn't Baldelli play in '09?

I assume that GoCubsGo missed that he was actually giving the wrong diagnosis for his illness. There is no reason he shouldn't be ready to go.

I'd take Rocco Baldelli over Joey Gathright every day. I'd take Rocco Badelli over Joey Gathright even if he wasn't misdiagnosed.

The penis envy of everything that Theo does is amazing. On a site where if your mom doesn't have a OBP of .375+ she should be disowned, Baldelli gets the treatment of some amazing stud. OK.
